An extraordinary result and a ringing endorsement for local democracy. The Chiswick Gunnersbury councillors have managed to overcome the incredible ineptness of their party at a national level by hard work and focusing on local issues. They deserve enormous credit and I think people of any political viewpoint should recognise it is good news that this sort of result cab occur.

I'm very glad to hear that John Todd has kept his seat. He has helped me more than once over the years although I'm not his constituent. He's everything a local councillor should be.

James, I understand your frustration with the FPTP system being hugely advantageous to the big three parties.The AV referendum in 2011 revealed the public's apathy in a 2/3s majority in favour of the status quo.The current system does give the government the freedom to pursue its manifesto and not get entangled in an unsatisfactory coalition.On a cheerier note, all is not necessarily lost for the voices raised by less popular parties: six years ago UKIP gained one paltry seat in parliament, yet they were instrumental in changing the course our borders, laws, trade and economy is run.

It's good news that those community spirited Councillors active in their own community who reach out to the greater community needing help are appreciated.
Good point Philippa. Our 3 Councillors in Southfield are so responsive and helpful. They work hard so it’s great to see they are appreciated and despite my feelings about this government I can see that other local Chiswick folk think similarly about their ward councillors too.

To be fair Janice, a lot of good people in other boroughs stood for the first time. So devastated by what was going on, they put themselves forward. They never had a realistic chance but it was heartwarming to see people pulling together. So there are always other factors to weigh up as well.
