Not something I have heard about, and I use SCR on my bike a lot.Thinking about it and applying some logic (not often present in forum on cycling matters...and I include my own posts in that!), I can see it being a real problem to impose for a couple of reasons.1. South of the A4 the LTN is intended to result in a long term reduction in traffic which would seem to obviate the need for a cycle lane there, against that it is also part of the normal route to school for a lot of kids and we should be encouraging them to use a bike (although they would probably cut through via Staveley to shorten the trip). On balance I do not see the need for a cycle lane south of the A4.2. North of the A4 to the Town Hall, the problem is lack of room.  There are 2 obvious pinch points: the junction with the A4 where there are 2 lanes going south, one straight over to GP and the other turning right onto the A4; and there is a slight bend in the road just beside the shops on SCR (and just south of the Town Hall).  We know from long experience that even with the current layout this section of SCR backs up regularly all the way to the Town Hall especially on a Friday afternoon during school term time.  Putting a cycle lane in, never mind one on both sides of SCR, would result in that back up being much worse as the junction would have to lose a lane.  Even in that was not the case there is barely enough room for 2 buses coming in opposite directions to pass at the second pinch point, putting in a cycle lane (or worse a cycle lane on both sides) would result in either large vehicles having to go into the cycle lanes to pass or being stuck. So if this is genuinely being proposed it will be by people who have never looked at the road layout, a cycle lane there just will not work.

There was a tweet by the Hounslow Cycling Campaign a few days ago (I think that means it was Michael Robinson). There is no further explanation so I think he has just used some software to create a mock up to start discussion and possibly just to wind some people up.

Very few cyclists seem to use Sutton Court Road probably due to the very sensible reason that the A4 junction is dangerous enough for car drivers let alone cyclists. I've cycled across a few times and generally regretted it. Most people cycling north to south seem to use the underpasses which I do but I've never been able to elegantly negotiate the barriers on the entry and exit despite using them hundreds of times. Justin's points should be sufficient to convince any sensible person this isn't a great idea. I'd add an additional one that there is nearly always a vehicle trying to exit Barrowgate Road onto SCR and this would block the cycle lane. The CGI has a raised kerb to separate it from the main carriageway which would mean the cyclist would need to bounce down back onto the road at this point. There is also a bus stop in the picture. I'm not sure you are allowed to have a cycle lane over a bus stop and there would need to be a crossing point over the cycle lane here if the kerb was also raised. The stopped bus would also block traffic and I don't think you could have bus activated phases here which mean a line of traffic could get stuck behind the bus and then get stuck again at the lights preventing following buses from picking up passengers. If Michael, or whoever at the HCC drew up these plans can explain why they believe they are workable, it would be interesting to hear.
