Covid Commemoration

As a council tax payer I have received a request to comment on Ealing Councils proposal for a 'Covid Commemoration'. I think it is a total waste of money for various reasons but would be interested in others views. This is their proposal:"Many will have lost loved ones, friends and neighbours during this time and all of us have suffered in different ways from the effects of lockdown. People across the borough rose to the challenge and got us through this period.We saw the extraordinary efforts of those who ensured that critical services continued to run, and that support was there for those that needed it. This is also an opportunity to look forward to the future and the recovery of Ealing.There are no firm views on what form this will take. We are interested in the views of individuals and organisations to help us shape a proposal. If you provide your email address, we can let you know what people said and how we intend to respond.How can we show recognition of our collective experience of covid?Is there an installation, a space for reflection, a mural or event that could serve as an acknowledgement of the pandemic, so that future generations can understand the impact on our community?How could we honour the loss and celebrate the spirit and resilience of the community through covid?The deadline for your ideas is 30 April 2022."

Far too soon, I'd say.  It's still rampant and new variants might arise.  A commemoration should be after the event, not during.I visited the wall in London: that is a bit dismaying as there are many hearts not yet used - it is as if people were waiting for more dead.

Too early - it's definitely not over - they've just stopped testing so there can't be any figures of the numbers of cases. - as per Donald Trump's suggestion..  The numbers in hospital are rising though and are very high.

"I visited the wall in London: that is a bit dismaying as there are many hearts not yet used - it is as if people were waiting for more dead" Most likely they remove many after certain time and replace them with fresh ones to be filled in.Bit like the walls outside abbey road studios where they paint the walls blank when messages get filled and overlapping

Not yet. Much too soon - people are still dying. The Johnson apologists will insist that we wait until all the facts are known! The inescapable fact is we already have 171,000 deaths - the highest absolute number among Western European countries, and the second highest as a percentage of population. If that's success in dealing with the pandemic, I'm a Dutchman.

I suppose that the government’s mantra of living with Covid which means Covid related deaths continue for a while yet gets them out of facing an enquiry which they are desperate to avoid.

Well the Grenfell Inquiry is taking a long time and hasn't shown Govt in a very good light so far. You might have to wait for another war before you get another enquiry.
