I used the service for several years until it became necessary for me to buy a car (long story/don't ask). Very rarely had any issues finding a car short of having to walk a little further to pick one up. While your anxiety might mean you book it for a little longer than necessary, better that than face a 'fine'. Clean, new and well-serviced vehicles. Nothing really not to like for shortish journeys in/around London.

Similar experience to Gordon. I've got my own car now for reasons, but Zip were really useful when I didn't have one for the occasional journey. Always something within a moderate walking distance, and the cars are in good shape. Don't recall fines - it was more that you couldn't finish of the return without paying for the next half hour block. Annoying if you were only a few minutes over, but not a deal breaker.

Zip cars are more abundant in Chiswick than the Enterprise Car Club but I actually prefer Enterprise. They are easier and nicer to reach on the phone if things go wrong - ie car isn't there or not clean, while Zip is much more reliant on tech. That's my experience. But the concept is absolutely great once you get used to the system both are good.

I’ve been very pleased with zip cars. You can either book ahead, which is slightly cheaper or use a ‘blue’ zip car immediately which (depending on the local authority) you can drive and leave wherever you go, including in residents’ bays. The cars are pretty new and regularly cleaned. There are a couple of Enterprise car club cars about in Chiswick which are slightly more flexible as you can book in 15 minute increments whereas zip are 30 mins. You unlock using your mobile phone and fuel is ‘free’ There is a card in the car that you can use to buy it. Many of the blue zips are electric. You also have Hiya car which started as an AirBnB for cars but now has a fleet of small cars in Chiswick you can hire like a zip car. I’ve just hired a car for the whole 4 day Easter weekend for just over 200 quid. Petrol is extra with them. Then for a slightly posher experience you can get a polo, Mercedes or Tesla delivered to your house and picked up again by Virtuo which I’ve done as few times. Best to book well ahead though as they can be expensive at short notice. The number of on-demand cars is increasing steadily. To me it’s a great model and in a densely populated city makes a lot of sense for occasional users and a great and much cheaper alternative to car ownership.

A friend who came into London by car changed to coming in by train and using a car club car on days when there were several site visits to make.It was also an easy way to try out electric cars at the time.

Some friends visiting London used Turo , which they found very straightforward. It is, as someone, mentioned earlier, an Airbnb for cars. Basically, you can hire out your car for a daily rate when you don’t need to use it.
