Absolutely wonderful news.  Of course the release happening now raises many questions like why couldn’t the outstanding debt have been paid earlier?

Apparently the blah blah from government is that they were concerned the money would be used for terrorism purposes, but now there is a change of government there they have reconsidered and the money will be used for humanitarian projects.What checks and balances there are on that was not clarifies on the piece I saw on tv.As I understand it, the 400m was given to us in the 70's for the supply of British armaments which were never delivered as a result of the change of government there to a radical Islamic one then.The money as such is not so much a debt as the return of money forwarded to us as payment on a incomplete business transaction.

That is good news, and not before time.The cynical side of me wonders how much this apparent approachment with the Iranians has to do with the need to access new sources of oil and gas to replace Russia.

I agree, TP.  And we also have the grotesque pantomime of our PM cosying up to Saudi Arabia, days after they held a mass killing of prisoners, with the same objective.  How low we have sunk.

I agree too, but bear in mind that we have been buying oil, gas and whatever else from dodgy governments for years, as has all of Europe.China is also has one of the most repressive and egregious regimes but we rely upon them for many things.I hope that if a deal is done with the Saudis, it comes with provisos on and is temporary.

Really we need politicians who will tell us the truth about the deals they do.  Probably the UK cannot be self-sufficient but maybe we should be grown up enough to understand the trade offs.  With Zelensky showing us the way, perhaps a party of comedians could enlighten us?

We could be a lot more self-sufficient than we are at present, but since we went in to virtue-signalling mode in order to appease the climate-change industry, we decided instead to pay murderous dictatorships to produce our oil and gas for us (a policy which also leaves us, as we have found in the past, at their mercy).
