"Up to £10K available to boost energy efficiency"Yes, it is good to insulate your home and have the most efficient boiler on the market, or a heat pump.... but only once you have done some proper draught-proofing and made the windows as well-insulated as possible. The cheapest energy-saving measures are:Work on windows. A huge amount of heat is lost because of draughts (most) and heat lost through the glass pane (less). So do work in the summer on old wooden glazing screens (whether sash or casement windows): build up the frame with epoxy resin at the top and/or bottom and make sure to install catches which actually pull the frames properly closed.Draught-proofing in the winter: put masking tape to seal the windows shut for the winter. No draughts means the only heat loss is through the glass itself, which is much slower. Install curtains (better) or blinds (OK). Triple layer curtains, with main fabric, wooly interlining and lining are the best. But make sure to have a pelmet at the top which overlaps with the curtain. Again this is a job for the summer. In winter: pull the curtains at dusk. Curtains are meant to be used to insulate the window. They are no use if not actually pulled!You can make your house much warmer, more beautiful and cheaper to run by doing this work on windows - and it can be done room by room over a few years.
