Cyclists and Red Traffic Lights

I was nearly knocked down by a cyclist on a pavement yesterday - not Chiswick.  The pavement was very narrow - 2 ft maximum and the adjacent road wasn't too dangerous for this fast chap.  If cyclists saw red lights as walls which had suddenly come up in front of them, perhaps they could see a reason to stop.

There must be something in the air at present. I walked to Hammersmith this afternoon, and saw two cyclists go straight through red lights. The second incident was at the junction of Chiswick High Road and Chiswick Lane. A westbound cyclist missed by a matter of inches being knocked down by a car exiting Chiswick Lane.

Thames Water are repairing a sewer on Thames Road. They have installed temporary traffic lights outside my house. I estimate 7/10 cyclists are ignoring red lights and about 1 in 5 are now happily cycling down the pavement.

Not just Traffc Lights,some dont think the zebra crossing applies. We crossed outside metro bank and a lady on her bike just kept coming and literally squeezed in front of my daughter and just carried on rather than slowing down which was the obvious action to take obove stopping. Clearly one does not cross if a cyclist is not within braking distance but some are just in a bubble when cycling

I stopped to let a couple cross the zebra crossing on South Parade on Saturday. A driver in a Mini coming from the opposite direction literally squeezed in front of them as they were half way across and just carried on rather than slowing down which was the obvious action when driving such a potentially lethal machine. Clearly pedestrians are literally taking their life in their hands when crossing before cars have stopped and some are just in a bubble when driving.

Mind you cars are crashing lights consistently at speed on the A316 next to Chiswick School and Chiswick House with loads of pedestrians about, but no one wants to talk about that cos cyclists!

I write this as a cyclist: it's undeniable that there are many - too many - that ignore the rules. I can make all the excuses in the world (pedestrians throwing themselves onto the street, the objective fatigue that sets off when hitting the sixth set of lights turning from red to amber the moment you get off the pedals, cars not giving way/turning without looking) but no good change starts until everyone admits to his/her own part of guilt. Bikes shouldn't be on pavements, should stop at zebra crossings and red lights. I'd go as far  as saying that they shouldn't be on the Acton Green path and along the Thames walkways. Education (and fines where necessary) are the key. But here it should indeed go both ways, both for the cyclist that jumps the lights and the driver that pulls in without looking.

Poor Barney, glad he is o.k., what's annoying is it seems everyone else's responsibility to keep cyclists safe when they have a safe place in theCycle Lane, cars have a safe place on the road, now what about pedestrians do we need white lines on pavements to separate cyclists and pedestrians if no rules apply to them they could at least stay in place thenon the pavements.

Last Friday I was driving home from Heston and stopped at red lights at the junction of Vicarage Farm Rd. and the A4, about fourth vehicle back. The lights changed and I was going straight across, the other vehicles in front were turning right. On my left hand side was a delivery driver on a bike, he started going straight - then out of the blue turned right straight across in front of me to go up the cycle track! Why not get in the right part of the road and indicate right? Idiot.

I do have a little sympathy for delivery bikes because these people are under so much pressure to speed up deliveries and are usually on minimum wage are zero contract and they are desperate just to make a living rather than suck off the State. I do, however, have zero tolerance for the recreational high speed Lycra bums who break the law simply because they want to maintain momentum and keep their Fitbits happy. Their lawbreaking is pure arrogance and self entitlement!!

I was only saying recently, they go past my house a lot. We’re near the depot. I consider they are the cycle equivalent of rat runners. Having said that I don’t like that term. I’m in favour of taking the shortest route. Plus I think it’s a horrible job that I would not want to do. At least they don’t have to deal with road closures, LTNS but they don’t have the benefit of a heater . Swings and roundabouts 😂👍

This is only the case where there is a red light camera. Unfortunately there is only one camera at the junction with Staveley Road and northbound only. Chiswick House Pedestrian, Edensor Road and Hartington Road don't have cameras.

Ah, the old sweeping generalisation of motorists consistently crashing red lights. If this were happening, which it isn't, given the parlous state of TFL finances and LB Hounslow's love of fining vehicles at the drop of a hat there would be a red light camera in place. The simple fact that there isn't would suggest that the claims of routine red light jumping are somewhat exaggerated by certain members of the road using community. That said, of course, when a motorist jumps a red light they have a registration plate to enable post-event fines and penalties to be issued, would it were the same for cyclists and other users.

I'd like to add that it's pretty common to see drivers going past amber traffic lights, even where there are traffic light cameras. You are permitted to pass an amber traffic light if it's unsafe to stop, but if it is safe to stop, then you are passing a signal that should be obeyed the same way as a red light i.e. you must stop and not pass it.Back in the 70s (or 80s) there was a public information film about 'Ambler Gamblers'.And, yes plenty of cyclists pass red light signals and they shouldn't. There are bad cyclists out there and bad car drivers out there, and then there are more cyclists and drivers in both camps who 'bend' the laws when it suits them.

Andrew, I completely agree that there are both bad drivers and cyclists.At 7.15am this morning at the above location whilst waiting for the green pedestrian lights to come up to cross from CHR across HT, about 3 minutes, I counted 18 cyclists crashing red/amber lights, veering onto wrong side of HT and onto the pavement at that busy junction.Interestingly, I did not witness any motorists performing any of the above transgressions.Again I invite Messrs Pike, Robinson, Saper and Campbell or anyone else to join me and witness these daily events Monday to Friday, however I won't hold my breath for their acceptance...No motorists did the same

Too much nanny state perhaps.  It's much easier to make it more dangerous just by not having any public information advertising of good and bad behaviour.  It's everybody doing dangerous things.  This afternoon I saw a Vespa type scooter overtaking on a zebra crossing just as someone crossed and there could so easily have been someone else crossing the other way. How are all these scooter riders allowed to all carry 'L' plates and be working - don't they have to have insurance?  Don't they ever take tests?  I don't think I've seen one without 'L' plates.In the park there are cyclists who approach at speed which is particularly worrying when they arrive from behind and squeeze past within inches of you.  What about using a bell?  Or just s l o w i n g  d o w n !Watched a black Golf overtake and speed through the most definitely red lights on the A4 and so fast I wondered whether it was going to stop at the next ones.  It did.Surely there has been enough nudging over maximum speed limits?  There really should be no quibbling if you exceed the limits and get caught because a camera snaps you. The warnings and alerts have been there for some time.  You can only blame yourself if you didn't make the most of the time you had to practise staying within the limit. I believe there is an advertising campaign on its way.

I have to say a little self-policing by law-abiding considerate cyclists wouldn't go amiss. Bad behaviour behind the wheel will usually provoke a bout of horn-honking and fist-waving from other drivers, while cyclists seem to observe some sort of code of "bikes against the world" solidarity". I was in a bus the other day stopped at a red light on the High Road. Also patiently waiting at the lights were two cyclists. Another chap on a bike just bowled straight past the lot of us as if these traffic light things were nothing to do with him. I expected the two law-abiders to at least "have a word" but I'm afraid it was a case of see no evil. I regularly witness people on bikes remonstrating with drivers who have behaved badly - indeed I do so myself when I'm on two wheels, but I don't recall ever seeing one cyclist chastise another.

Sometimes One Way roads are narrowed at the end to a single exiting lane for cars and marked there as "No Entry Except Cyclists".  This is why pedestrians must always follow the Green Cross Code or whatever the latest rendition is if there is one still to look both ways and keep on looking (at the road not your mobile) and listening as you cross.  As a pedestrian you also have to pay attention to reversing motorists or those who suddenly reverse into pedestrians standing or crossing behind or between their parked car and another neither of whom always look properly themselves.  Somebody died in Ealing recently in the main street after being reversed into and I don't think the driver knew as he/she just drove off.  There is something in the Highway Code about Reversing for motorists.

Hate to say this but 2 weeks ago on a sat morning a cllr went straight through red lights outside old barclays bank and crossed over to turn right into TGT and just about got away with it as traffic just about started moving out from Annandale road. The first car slowed down to let him get over . Maybe he thought he had time to cut over after the traffic stopped exiting TGT and Annadale traffic started moving as to the delay. Wish i had caught it on my phone.

Julian, he always does it. And not just that red light either. He does it on all of them. It is very well known and seen very regularly. I actually do have a photo of him riding illegally on the pavement in a Chiswick LTN, which is another thing he and other local Conservative Councillors have been seen doing.I often show it to his fellow Councillor Sam Hearn whenever he gets carried away on one of his anti-cycling rants on Nextdoor.

Get the Councillor there. He'll enjoy it. He has the experience and the answers you are looking for. Every time you bleat about law-breaking cyclists I'll point you in his direction as he is the only person who rides bikes who I know routinely breaks the law. Also you can ask your friend Cllr Biddolph why she rode a bike on the pavement the only time she had been on a bike in 50 years or whatever. And here is another tip: at least two other Chiswick Councillors break the law on their bikes. So that is four out of 9 that you can ask. Pretty good representation I'd say. You know the law-breakers personally so ask them yourself instead of hoping for strangers, who would rather eat their own drive chains than spend time with you, to help you figure it out.

Loraine, not wishing to intrude, but please try not to tar everyone with the same brush just because they're riding a bike. As Paul will attest we take different sides in this debate, however I do own a bicycle and it would be nice to ride it as once I used to without being taken for a member of "the cycling lobby". I was quite happy before the cycle lanes came and perfectly able to cycle on the main highway without breaking any rules of the road. I don't like the CHR cycle lane arrangements but I'm more upset at being classified as something I'm not just because I use a legitimate form of personal transport. Ironically I now cycle an awful lot less than I used to before this monstrosity was inflicted on us, but hopefully I will saddle up more once the witch-hunting stops. Assuming it ever does.

Yeah "fair enough". It is totally normal and inoffensive to refer to people who ride bikes as the "cycling fraternity" and expect other people who ride bikes to answer for the deeds of their "cycling colleagues". I routinely ask the "motoring fraternity" to come and stand with me on Sutton Court Road and explain why their "motoring colleagues" can't drive at 20mph or under. It's pretty obvious there is no labelling or othering going on at all with this language.

Sorry to hear about Barney but glad that he's made a full recovery.A client's puppy was hit by an e-cyclist on the pavement and we now have to add remedial sessions to his regular training because this erstwhile happy-go-lucky chap is now very nervous when out.Needless to say the cyclist rode off without giving a damn and wouldn't be identifiable anyway.It is important to report such incidents to the police (and for people too). They won't do anything, but the volume of complaints adds to the allocation of resources. If it's not reported, it's treated as not having happened.

And very well paid at that. There are enough of them. Noticed the dozens of them standing around doing notohing at the Piers Corbyn debacle. Obviously no management 'prioritising' there. Half of those could have been deployed to catch criminal cyclists.

You'd love ALL LAWS being ENFORCED Steve ... all those motorists picking up points for exceeding the 20mph speed limits ... within a couple of weeks, there would be so many motorists who'd picked up 12+ points and be off the road, we wouldn't have so much congestion, and you'd be able to drive around unencumbered by congestion (but only as long as you stick to the speed limits yourself).

@ Janice.  That's the problem - and just  s l o w i n g  d o w n  would make a difference.  It makes it easier for pedestrians to cross roads sothey don't take so many risks and easier and safer for cyclists if time and space is given to them ie priority!  A bit more respect for each other!

On my second dog walk today around TG and nearby roads, not a parking space to be had ! The noticeable absence was that of cyclists - anyone know why that is ?
