HIstory Sawmills

Think City Road was the last Sawmillsto close, would older Members know if there were othersaround Chiswick/Acton area 1900s

Two timber locations in Chiswick come to mind..both active some 50 years ago.A noisy and smelly Timber Yard operated at the back of Ernest Gardens..off Magnolia Road.Then of course there was Mumfords at 335 Chiswick High Road.

I remember getting our double glazed sprung sash wooden window frames from Mumfords in Chiswick High Road.

On Thames Road. .where Oliver Close is now located, there used to be a Company called R J Parks who made giant timber crates for packaging aircraft parts etc for shipment all over the world.These crates were left outside the premises encouraging local children to injure themselves!Lots of sawing went on at this Chiswick location.

Hi JimThe West London Timber Company had their Saw mill at the end of Herbert Gardens, also the lumber yard was at the end of Ernest Gardens.The Had a small Lister towing engine to move the crates of hardboard on little trucks, it was just like a small train.We used to jump on for the ride around to there offices and storage in the building that became worth perfume right by the railway bridge over Thames Road.it was great fun on the return journey it went faster

Thanks for that Bernard.Ah yes Herbert Gardens...such a short little street..home once to the legend Sid!Deviating..why was Herbert,Ernest and Lorraine so called. I suppose one could add Dean!
