Burlington Lane

You think you’ve seen it all - but no.This afternoon, I watched 4 drivers entering Burlington Lane from the A316 via the right hand side of the road. You couldn’t make it up!

Yep I saw the same on Friday. Just when you think you've seen it all drivers will surprise you. The build out in the middle of the road means it is impossible for a drive to not know they are committing an offence doing this. As always a camera will have to go up like it did at Harvard Hill to stop them doing it.

If you assume that every road user is psychopathic idiot you will not be disappointed.Equally driving from Hartingdon Road across the A316 to Dan Mason I have been surprised twice by cyclists coming up my inside and turning right onto A316 a few feet from my bumper. (there are 2 different safe ways of making that right turn).  So it is not just drivers who can be complete idiots

I must be missing something here, what advantage are drivers gaining by doing this? I assume you are referring to the junction where the part of Burlington Lane between Chiswick School and Chiswick House Grounds joins the A316 part of Burlington Lane that runs to the Hogarth Roundabout.

Any driver performing this, now illegal, manoeuvre is avoiding a detour (if they are coming from Chiswick Bridge) via the Hogarth Roundabout and the A4. If they have come from the Hogarth Roundabout they are avoiding a detour along the A4.

They are using the wrong side of the road because their side is blocked by a barrier to prevent them entering Burlington Lane from the A316. So they drive on the other side which remains open for people exiting Burlington Lane onto the A316.

saw several drivers do the same. Is it now one way? Surely markings should be clearer.

Okay thanks I understand now, this barrier must have been installed since I last drove along the A316 which wasn’t that long ago.

I just checked on the Hounslow website and this barrier was due to be installed on January 24th. So much for my observation skills then as I drove up the A316 to the Hogarth roundabout on the 26th!

It's not a one way road but is "exit only" at the very end -  where it intersects with the A-316. If you are within the Grove Park area you can drive down Burlington Lane to either exit onto the A-316 or park on-street to perhaps visit Chiswick School via the main visitor entry or walk in Chiswick House Park. You can then return to your vehicle, U-turn and head back into Grove Park the same way you came as it's still a two-way road. Signage located on the A-316 end of Burlington Lane indicates "No Entry" and a hard barrier is across what used to be the entry lane. It would help alleviate confusion when coming from the Hogarth Roundabout if the right turn arrow that's actually painted on the road (on the A-316) was removed as it's actually invalid.

Agreed it would alleviate confusion if TfL coordinated its actions with LBH and ensured that the A316 road markings were consistent with the 'exit only'status of Burlington Lane.However this is only a 'trial' scheme so perhaps TfL are simply bidding their time?
