Bologna

Has anyone recommendations where to stay in Bologna and good restaurants?  Don't know if we will get there but hoping things will change and it might be possible sometime.

We stayed at  the Art Orologio Hotel which is good value and very central .The food is fantastic in Bologna ; it’s hard to go  wrong. Rick Stein did a programme from there a few years ago and we went to one of those that he recommended.  Orsa, I thinkThe Via Del Protello  is featured in the programme, it’s busy but the food is so tempting.In Bologna too, they are very generous with the food provided with your aperitivo. I hope you manage to get there. And the gelato is superb!

I’ve stayed in Bologna many times, always at the Starhotel Excelsior opposite the main railway station from where the new monorail to the airport departs.  Book direct on their website and join the Starhotels member programme for discounts. Unlike many cities, the area around the railway station is actually ok.  Comfortable and very quiet hotel, good service and very convenient for day trips to a huge choice of historic nearby towns and cities - Florence is 40mins away by train with three high speed trains an hour.  The centre of Bologna is 15mins walk away along the historic pedestrian arcades but there are plenty of buses you can catch to get there too and there are lots of restaurants at the halfway point along Via Augusto Righi.

Can't really give restaurant or hotel recommendations but don't miss out visiting the Pinacoteca Nazionale which is excellent even by the standard of Italian art galleries.

If you can try to get hold of a copy of Osteria d'Italia published by the Slow Food movement - it's in Italian but easy to understand. All types of places to eat out from very humble to grand. Never had a bad meal from any listings

See if you can access Rick Stein’s Long Weekends Series1 Episode 5 on, I think, BBC TV. He did Bologna and I defy you not to go!!

Just don't expect spaghetti Bolognese in Bologna! There were a couple of really good restaurants just out of the centre we really liked. I'll see if I can locate them on Google Maps.

Trattoria dal Biassanot highly recommended.  Genuine and traditional, serving "ragu" which is what spaghetti bolognese is called in its city of birth.

Following seeing it on rick steins series it's on my list of places to go! If you look on the Rick Stein website he has a blog. All the recommendations for restaurants etc from the series are on his blog. Unfortunately you have to spend ages going back through to find the relevant page.
