Traffic signs

Why do some prohibitive red circled traffic signs such as the no left, right or u turn have a red line across them while many others such as the  now popular here, motorbike above car sign don’t? It would be much clearer if all these signs had a red diagonal line across them.

As I mentioned elsewhere, the 1962 Warboys report, which came up with all the 'new, road signs, originally did have a bicycle or a truck or whatever crossed out to indicate it wasn't allowed, but for some reason the final 1964 designs had no diagonal bar, and we've been confused about them ever since.

I watched 4 cars go through Fishers Lane recently . I wasn’t close enough to warn them. I assume this bike over car sign is still not being understood. I think a red line through would stand out more. Larger signs perhaps or a no vehicles in writing sign ? It seems odd after so long that locals wouldn’t be aware of the restrictions. Perhaps those  not on social media are not aware or of course not local.Finally I think if you see a car driving through ahead of you, then possibly you don’t look for signs and assume it’s a normal road. Particularly if you see a bus go through.

I go through fishers lane under pass quite often and to be hionest ive not seen a car go under for about 6 months at best. Most users will know it and now understand they cant use it

Yes I monitor it regularly Julian. You’re right I’ve rarely seen any. So I was surprised and felt very sorry for these people about to get a fine. As I said I wonder if one car going through is why others follow. They were in fairly quick succession. I can’t explain it but the entrance is wider than a normal road isn’t it so maybe again the signs aren’t quite so obvious . I suppose the thing to do is check what fines have been issued recently. How can I do that , anyone know ?

Motorists also don't stop at zebra crossings and run people over.  They are often travelling too fast and not paying attention.  Not learning and knowing their Highway Code well enough and never re-visiting it over tens of years would also be a problem.
