Must be getting old

Sometimes we notice something in the news from the past or in conversation and say "was it that long ago" Well, i thought that when seeing that CH4's The Tube last episode was 35 flipping years ago. and 40 years in total. It was certainly groundbreaking with Jools Holland, Paula Yates, Leslie Ash and
Muriel Gray.

With The Queen's Platinum Jubilee coming up...I'm reminded of the time she became Queen in February 1951 when she was on holiday in Kenya.Within days she was being driven down Chiswick High Road having just arrived back at Heathrow.There were hundreds of us locals lined up outside the old Gunnersbury Station as the Royal car passed by.Her Majesty looked pale.. having no doubt having a dusting of talcum powder on her face...to reduce any holiday tan.So Her Majesty eased down CHISWICK HIGH ROAD in those first few days of her Reign!Blimey...that was nearly 71 years ago!

Jim that trip along CHR would have been 1952 I believe. I saw her pass by on the GWR that day. Memories..

Hello Audrey and all.The King (George VI) died in February 1951..and Princess Elizabeth immediately became Queen.("The King is dead..God Save the Queen)Queen Elizabeth's Coronation wasn't until June in 1952.I could be wrong!We recall the news of the conquering of Mount Everest being delayed a day or two to coincide with the Coronation... part of which I witnessed from my Dad's shoulders in The Mall.(Lovely to hear from you Audrey)

George VI died in February 1952, and the Coronation was June 1953. My father bought our first TV to watch it. It was a Phillips back-projection model with a large wooden cabinet and a silk screen.

I was in the cubs at the time, and I can remember having to re-learn the opening words of the National Anthem for ceremonial occasions. It seemed very strange at the time.

"it was a year earlier than a lot of people think" Thus because the Coronation was in 1953, "a lot of people think" that George VI* had died in 1953 as well.And not in 1952.Whereas in fact "it was a year earlier than a lot of people think" However its when you *first* rememeber that George VI had died in 1952, that problems can arise, michael adams* Those being among the remaining 20% of the population who have ever heard of George V1 in the first place.Before that film anyway.

I feel the signs of 'getting on' are when you see various experts, be they, police officers, doctors etc. who look about twelve in your eyes! My Mum and Dad always used to say that things go around - and with age you realise that there is nothing new under the sun. I can just about remember having bins in the streets for food waste that was collected weekly by the council and of course recycling bottles and getting the deposit back, question is why did these things ever stop?

“ question is why did these things ever stop?”I guess because Councils needed to be seen to be doing something so they employed ‘consultants’ at huge expense to come up with innovative ideas, most of which were nonsense. However, having wasted our money on these ‘consultants’ they felt they needed to just go ahead with some of the dumbass ideas to justify wasting our money! The cycle tracks and LTNs are a good example of these dumbass ideas and money waste. But the consultants and ‘designers’ laugh all the way to the bank at taxpayers expense!

Remembering 1953:Seeing the new Queen and Prince Phillip inside a gold carriage, being taken past the George Washington pub and along England's Lane, cheered by hundreds of people.The FA Cup was won by Blackpool, beating Bolton Wanderers 4-3 and inspired by the nation's favourite footballer, the "master of the dribble", Stanley Matthews.I wasn't star struck however, even at a fledging age I was an indoctrinated Gooner. Young men in those days supported their local sides, so for me it was either Arsenal or Tottenham.
