The reason for Bojo's re-gig of Covid restrictions could be seen as the Tories returning to their original wish for herd immunity. Also, to get one in on the rest of Europe as yet another Bojo Covid British first while the rest of Europe is still falling over itself while viruses rage. The relaxation will additionally allow anti-vaxxers and those averse to restrictions to go around with smirks instead of skulking scowls of guilt.

Can you explain why lifting restrictions would make anti-vaxxers happy and smug? I’d understand if you said the same for anti-maskers; their not wearing masks would now be endorsed. But anti-vaxxers are going to be even more at risk so not lifting restrictions should not make them happy. Quite the opposite surely? Or are you suggesting that they are so dumb that they do not understand the implications?

Alan: Anti-vaxxers tend in the main to be anti-maskers as well don't they? Maybe you’re right as the dissipation of strict Covid rules means the antis of whatever ilk will blend more quietly now into the unmasked and un-social distancing greater throng of which there will still be a contingent sticking to the now non-strict advisory advice continuing to be masked up on transport and in shops and busy indoor places if not for themselves but, as always was the case, for others of trepid demeanour while uncertain viruses causing unprecedented and peculiar symptoms carry on raging.

Isn’t only the Brexitards who want to annoy Macron?  As if Macron could give a toss what Mud Island inhabitants think of him. Anyway, as our inept government relax Covid rules, purely to detract from Partygate,  we will no doubt soon surpass France’s 460,000 daily cases.

Steve Taylor: Yesterday's Covid positive count for UK was 95,935 at a daily average for last 7 days at 82,092. By any medical standards horrendous figures. With restrictions now crazily relaxed it's back to herd immunity that the Cons wanted all along.

Also still a MASSIVE number of Covid deaths which the Conservatives seem to shrug off in their feeble attempt to detract from Partygate.  The fools really seem to take the public as imbeciles.  Yes, yes, yes,  I know they were given positive confirmation that the majority of Brits were dense when the referendum results were known, but surely they can understand that the public are now ‘on to them’ ?

Many of the people currently dying within 28 days of a Covid diagnosis are dying of the heart attacks and strokes which brought them to hospital where they incidentally tested positive though symptom free. Those people cannot realistically be described as 'dying of Covid' but are in the daily count.The best part of 2000 people die in this country each day from all causes. The death rate this January is actually LOWER than the 5-year average, though we have to allow for a big surplus last January which will have raised that average.

Susan you are absolutely correct we know and intensive care doctor at major London hospital and he said all patients in intensive care are there due to others issues like heart attacks and whilst they may have covid non of them are being treated for that. So let’s keeps things in proportion….absolutely correct to lift restrictions just have to pray that another variant doesn’t appear which proves fatal.

SS again!He could get a job on SAGE, who on 17th December predicted that no further action than plan B would result in a minimum of 3000 hospitalisations per day, and deaths peaking between 600 and 6,000.  Actual highest rate was 2604 hospitalisations and 398 deaths.Even SAGE who are a busted flush don't predict over 460,000 cases, but SS may presuade them otherwise.

I don’t think SAGE do ‘predictions’. They do ‘projections’ based on a range of what if scenarios. Inevitably journalists pick up on the worse case projections to create drama or make a point. Sometimes sensible people like Chris Whitty give sensible advice that seems to conflict with the government line. People take on board sensible advice and/or journalist sensationalisms and hey presto the nasty SAGE ‘predictions’ are  wrong.

Admittedly this was a ‘worst-case’ scenario - the central prediction was for 60,000 in hospital by July – but you can understand the exasperation of NHS Trusts, who of course have to prepare for the worst-case scenario. By the way, the number of people in hospital with Covid across the UK on Sunday (June 2021) was 932.Imperial are desperate for talents, so SS should get a Professorship there no problem.
