Why? Because he says he was in the country thereby casting doubt on whether he was actually in the country.The issue is not that he has had a holiday - he has a young family and is entitled to do so. The question is where did he spend the holiday?

Of course, if Old Jeremiah was still Labour leader and had spent his Christmas holidays in Moscow, that would be a matter of public interest.

I could not care less what anyone was doing over festive period and bank holiday period. Mind you keir would likely tell you what his latest activity in the loft was  while whishing everone on the opposition front bench a lovely christmas by tweeting every individual christmas card with big hugs and kisses attached.

Richard Greenhough asks what business is it of mine where the Prime Minister went during his ten day break. The answer is that the unusual lack of official information about this period, the Prime Minister's stumbling reply when asked about the matter and his history of lying could indicate that he went overseas. It is a question that could be easily cleared up by an official statement.

I didn't offer an explanation as it would be self-evident to most people. The Prime Minister has said he was in the country. Unfortunately with Boris Johnson this needs to be confirmed by an official source as we can't take his word for it.

Doesn't he say 'in this country'? The way he hesitates before saying it seems really strange. It is a perfectly simple question and I think the questioner was surprised at the answer. It would be extraordinary if he has actually blurted out an easily disprovable lie on national TV but not necessarily out of character for him.

Saying or replying "I'm off to the country" is, of course, an old fashioned toff way of indicating a stay in or at some country seat or the decamping to ones own rural mansion. Boris's answer to a personal intrusive question is probably of a rare if half-truth without being wholy specific as to where he was staying for Christmas. I suppose the tabloids have sussed him out of his yuletide abidings ~ have they? Was probably Chequers the UK's public paid-for grace 'n favour pile for sitting prime ministers.

What are you lot like? Boris is entitled as anyone else to a break at Christmas just like all MP’s. You nasty lot of noisy Parker’s, I couldn’t care less where he was just hope he had a fabulous time. Back off everyone our PM is allowed a private life just like anyone else

Of course he's allowed a private life. However, the fact that Johnson has kept unusually shtum about his holiday makes one wonder whether it's another slightly dodgy freeloading arrangement.

TBH I think Boris was quite baffled about why the question was asked at that time. But his answer seemed quite genuine and to be fair he gave the interviewer a chance to elaborate when he added  “Where to you think?”  If the interviewer was suspicious about the answer he could and should have voiced his suspicions with a more direct follow up question. The question put “where have you been for the last 10 days?”  is actually a ridiculous question because Boris could have been in many places over a 10 day period considering that he has quite a large family!

It is his private life and how could you possibly know that many of his family don’t want to see him. That’s  somewhat unkind. Blood is thicker than water even in political or dysfunctional families.

The difficulty is , Jayne, that Johnson is known to lie to get himself out of any situation.  There is ample  evidence  to support that fact. He lied to get himself elected PM, after all and had been sacked from previous jobs for lying.  So whereas, under normal circumstances, it is not of any  great import where any PM chooses to spend Christmas, it becomes important when we know that Johnson lies at will,  has a reputation for laziness and whose model of ‘leadership’ allows the Cabinet Office to hold parties when people were dying because they feel they can get away with it. And the interview in which he claims to make buses made  of cardboard boxes with smiley people on them shows the utter contempt he has for honesty and integrity.

Tbh, I’m not sure that I’d be too keen on my father if he had broken my mother’s nose (like Stanley Johnson did to his wife) but,  as you say,  blood is thicker than water even in the most dysfunctional families.

I am no Johnson fan but(1) like most of us he is entitled to some time off and(2) he has given several media interviews over this period.  I hope your post was because you had better things to do than watch TV, Francis.  Otherwise I can't imagine why youstarted this thread.  Happy New Year.

His entire career is based on a very distant relationship with truth or accuracy. Spouting bollocks is his preferred modus operandi - especially in pretend educated latin. Or, as normal people note, a deceitful, twatting ****.Thus, Johnson and his activities are of public interest. Not personal. He gave that up when he attained his dream of being PM. He has become (makes one dry bolk to think this) the embodiment of the policies he promotes. His lies are worth noting. His evasions are worth noting. His private life needs to reflect his public declarations. No?
