The confusion comes when some circular signs have the action crossed out to show you can't do it, like No Right Turn, while others have an image of the banned thing but not crossed out, such as No Motor Vehicles (the legendary low-flying motor bike!)I think the origin of all our present signs was a wish to remove all reliance on reading actual words, like Halt at Major Road Ahead, or Crossing no Gates. With the comparatively high level of literacy in the UK, combined with a low level of understanding of road signs, it might be worth reinstating some text to help people decode some of the less obvious signs.
