Chiswick in voluntary lockdown ?

The article speaks of a 2% infection rate but the overall London rate is 5%, so we are actually doing well. South London is the Omicron hot spot, places like Tooting and Clapham.

The issue is staffing which is common across many sectors, thousands of flights have been cancelled worldwide due to staff shortages who either have tested positive or been asked to self isolate.

Definitely not correct. We were at The Roebuck on Christmas Eve, and one of the staff said they were open until after midnight.

Seems London infection rate now 10%. We should be done by New Year at this rate.I would expect infection rates in W4 to be lower than average -- better educated population with, surely, a high rate of vaccination.

I’ve not known so many people personally with Covid as I’ve seen in last 2 weeks. So I don’t think it discriminating in favour of the educated 😉There’s just so much around it’s almost impossible to avoid. On a positive note though most of my friends have had mild symptoms Thank goodness

What an interesting supposition? Is it a soppy position that Chiswick is more educated than other parts of Sadiq Khan's unvaccinated London?

Difficult to analyse.  If Omicron is less dangerous than before but more people are testing positive, then the impact could be the same. If we're getting twice as many positive cases but 80% of them are vaccinated compared with none last year, then there should be less pressure on hospitals and fewer deaths. The problem now seems to be that hospital staff are being counted out by tests and having to isolate so the capacity of hospitals is being reduced. I guess the government is closely watching the graphs to see if the vaccination rate is gaining on the positive testing rate and overtaking the getting seriously ill rate. As for the 'lockdown', the government is sneakily resisting ordering places to close down, presumably to avoid paying compensation, while at the same time encouraging people to cancel their bookings, for which there's no compensation.

“ the government is sneakily resisting ordering places to close down, presumably to avoid paying compensation”The government is under no obligation to pay compensation other than what Sunak announced last week for the hospitality industry which I recall is up to £6,000 per establishment.  If the government had enforced a full lockdown when Omicron was first identified as being so rapid at infection, you wouldn’t have so many people infected and so many people unable to work. The government shot itself in the foot and is to blame for the staff shortages which have now forced so many pubs and restaurants to ‘lockdown’. These places usually operate with extremely lean staff structures so a couple of staff off could be the deciding factor and force the business to close. Most companies are now suffering the economic consequences of the government’s weakness!!

Hang on Steve, if the government had implemented a ‘lock down’ it wouldn’t matter whether the staff in restaurants and pubs were infected with the Omicron strain, because there wouldn’t be any customers for them to serve.’I supported the idea of a lockdown in March 2020 because there were no vaccines, we really had no idea how the pandemic would develop, but a total lockdown because of omicron - no - you’d just be extending the pain for longer.

I can't find anywhere in London with a 5% infection rate though parts of Tooting are over 4%

Perhaps Susan Kelly can provide the evidence to back up her education standards comment.Are we looking at o levels, A levels or degrees? Or maybe a combination of all 3.

Actually, Richmond upon Thames has the highest number of graduates in comparison with other London councils, although having a degree is not an indicator necessarily of great intelligence or common sense necessarily.
