Stolen number plates

Sometime over last night, neighbour had both plates taken off his car.  He arranged a lock up garage to get the car off the street and rang the Police to advise them..  Rather than be helpful and sympathetic to his plight, he was told that if he drove without plates and was stopped he would be fined, have 3 points on his licence, no insurance, etc. etc.  No suggestions as to how to overcome this issue.However good neighbour suggested he contact local garages to see if they had red plates and could assist.

People will probably use stolen plates to avoid congestion and drive through all the ridiculous LTN's.

If the gentleman belongs to a break down service, they will transport him to the nearest garage

A friend of mine had his number plates cloned (rather than stolen) and was rather taken aback to receive a PCN from Brent for a yellow box offence. On looking at the photos, it was the same model of car as his (a 1990s era Volvo). Using stolen plates isn’t a great idea as the police will add the registration to their ANPR list so you’d get stopped pretty quickly if you are in London.

If he walks to Halfords with the registration document they can make him up some replacement plates.Or at least they did last time I tried.

Number plate problem sorted in a few hours.  Now for the aftermath, a deluge of penalty notices and being stopped every time you drive away from your home area.

A nightmare, I had a pal many years ago who experienced a similar thing except hers number plate was cloned. The first she knew about it was police came knocking on her door to arrest her for robbery 🥺🥺🥺🥺 terrifying experience.

I heard a horrid story recently where similar happen to a man who wasgrieving the loss of a family member and had all the hassle of fines etc.,to cope with, it's sometimes difficult to prove you are innocent.

As replacement number plates have been made, to avoid being accused of whatever the car with his original plates is doing, I'd suggest making something distinctive by front and rear number plates, a transfer sticker, poppy or whatever so when the "offences" committed by the other vehicle arrive you can clearly distinguish your cars from those. You could have had "UK" plates for example, which are clearly "new" from what he previously had. You need to be able to show "your" car is different despite same number plate.

Well I think the police realised their error after they arrested her, she didn’t fit the description wrong sex, colour and height plus all her work colleagues confirmed she was in the office at the time of the robbery. The police must know plates get cloned so should have investigated further before arresting her.
