In the UK we start far too early with formal English and Maths teaching, so some children quickly get left behind and stressed and parents start to worry about trying to push them onwards. In most other countries children don't start formal teaching until they're about 7 or 8 years old, concentrating until then on play-based activities that develop speaking and listening and a sense of number through handing objects, etc - and it seems to work OK. Assuming your 5 year-old is going to school, why not leave it at that?!
