Where are the ULEZ cameras?

My parents are coming to visit early next month in their ULEZ non-compliant car. I'm at work during the day so they will be left to their own devices. They haven't had booster jabs yet so they don't want to use public transport but they do want to do a bit of sight-seeing locally - Chiswick House Grounds, the river etc.I don't want them to end up with a huge bill at the end of the week so, apart from when they actually enter the zone, where are they likely to be charged.

As I understand it there will be a charge for every day the vehicle is moved within the zone.

Fact of the matter is they will be charged every day they drive within the zone. Bear in mind also that if they are not familiar with the area they could get extra fines for driving in the new low traffic neighbourhoods if they are unaware of the restrictions and times.

Paul said, "It's safe to assume that if your parents are driving inside that area they will be spotted by a camera."Previous discussions on this forum revealed that the ANPR cameras being installed across the Chiswick area will not help enforce the ULEZ. The link to the map only gives the location of the border so the original question of where cameras are within the zone are situated. I would be surprised if they were on any roads that weren't managed by TfL so driving around Chiswick may not lead to any charges. If anywhere there could be one at the Sutton Court Road junction with the A4 which is effectively an entry point to the ULEZ so if you are going to the river from the north of Chiswick you would be charged.

Requests  for info re positions of ULEZ cameras under FOI Act have been turned down by  TFL.

Here are some other options instead of trying to circumvent the rules:1. Pay £12.50 for the privilege of making everyone breathe their emissions2. Take a taxi3. Use Zipcar4. Rent electric bicycles5. Walk

The 25th June 2021 data request ULEZ costs I found are quoted as follows:“The implementation costs for the expanded ULEZ are currently estimated to be between £120 million and £130 million. This cost includes improved access to public transport, staffing and the signs, cameras and back office systems needed to make the scheme operational. The Mayor and TfL have sought to deliver the infrastructure needed to operate the scheme in the most cost-effective way possible.”I think you can assume that there are many ULEZ cameras.In addition, I flag up the existence of the TFL Jam Cameras, a useful Tool to look at Road traffic conditions.  There are many “JamCams”.    joining up all the dots, I assume TFL are using their own JamCams.If you do not know about JamCams then they are all found here:-www.TflJamcams.netBest.

Alex and Richard, my father has limited mobility and neither of my parents owns a smart phone so none of the options you suggest are viable. They live off a small pension but won't let me share the cost of taxis or paying the charges. As they will only have driven their car a few hundred yards inside the zone to incur the original charge and own a car which is just one level below the required standard and otherwise has very low emissions they aren't exactly causing a major pollution problem.It is a Euro 5 standard diesel which emits virtually no particulates and by the time a Euro 6 petrol or diesel car (which are exempt) are driven to Hammersmith from their point of entry they will have emitted more NOx than my parents' car.

Is there a Zip Car bay near you?If so it may be an answer. There is one near me and I have been meaning to give it a go as their website makes it look fairly straightforward.

Perhaps you could sign them up to auto-pay, safe in the knowledge that if they inadvertently enter the ULEZ zone, they will pay the daily charge automtically? There is a cost to sign-up though (for the Congestion Charge auto-pay it is/was(?) an annual fee equivalent to the daily cost). Good luck.

Felicity, if you are signed up with Uber, you could book them rides and if they don't want you to suffer the charges they could reimburse you. I do something similar for my teenage stepson.

For the congestion charge there are cameras on all the entry/exit points and a limited number of cameras operating inside the zone (don’t know how many, the information is available, I’d guess it was between 10-20).For the ULEZ I understand there are cameras at the majority of entrance/exit points but I imagine that a lot of short local journeys wouldn’t pass any cameras so if you have autopay you wouldn’t incur the ULEZ charge.

That's correct particularly if it right the Sutton Court Road junction camera is enforcing the restriction. It will catch a huge number of people unawares.I thought Felicity's claim about a compliant car being driven to Hammersmith being more polluting than a non-compliant diesel car being driven to Chiswick but she is right. What's more that assumes the car is at the limit of emissions for the standard. A smaller non-compliant car could actually have fewer emissions than a larger compliant car. The charge does seem to have a unduly large impact on people on lower incomes. For anyone who wouldn't be seen dead in a car over three years old it is something they don't need to worry about.

What I find absolutely staggering is how all these cameras can be found and funded for extracting fines for various contraventions - yet to get them installed for fly-tipping and other illegal traffic offences seems to be beyond anyone's capability.

Think that’s easy to answer, these cameras guarantee income everyday! flytipping is dreadful but that’s down to appalling people who think it is acceptable and can be done anywhere. Cameras won’t help unless you literally placed them on every road & lane in the country not practical ha!

No - we all know where the 'hot-spots' for this anti social behaviour are. Dartford in Kent have a camera system that automatically alerts the operators to any untoward activity immediately, it cost, but it works. I think also you overlook the massive fines that can be levied from those caught (also prison sentences) and found guilty, and the fact that their vehicles can be removed and crushed.
