Nothing wrong with this.  They are easier to pass (when it is safe to do so) than a long line of single riders.  I can't understand car drivers who feel the need to overtake whatever and wherever safe or not.

I agree with Will Carling's comments. When I am cycling, I always try not to hold up cars that need to pass me - even in 20 mph zones they are likely to want to travel faster than I can pedal, and on country roads Jeremy Vine's ideas are just bad manners.

He is a controversialist who sees it as his job to make provocative statements like this.There probably are circumstances in which cyclists would benefit from riding in a bunch rather than in single file but in most cases it would be advisable to adhere to the Highway Code rather than listen to a man seeking to raise his social media profile. The risk to a group of cyclists could be increased because if the view ahead for the vehicle trying to overtake them is obscured then there is more likelihood of an abortive move due to an oncoming vehicle in the opposite direction. Judging the relative speeds of a group of cyclists on the inside in a split second isn't easy and mistakes will be made.

As a pedestrian I do see a lot more cyclists riding two abreast just dawdling along.I do think the 20 mph limit is good for cars and people around them. However it seems selfish to hold traffic up at speeds a lot slower than 20 mph?

You're allowed to ride two abreast now and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a change in that coming.  As always it is important to stay safe.  The other day I saw what I think was a father and son out riding together - one after the other - but the youngster in pursuit of parent turned and cut the corner on the wrong side of the road on the two way street.  It's a blind corner and if I'd have been on the street I'd have yelled out.  Parent was oblivious.  Please be careful and teach your children well.

When you are out riding in a group it is much more considerate to following vehicles to form a short line 2 abreast than a long line of single cyclists that needs a much greater length of road to overtake. This is particularly true on winding roads.

Surely all road users are supposed to show caution, anticipation and tolerance and to try to accommodate each other as much as possible.This is just the opposite and confrontational in a sense.Still,it gets an over paid and over rated mouth back on the news, I suppose it has served its purpose.I thought he was ok on Eggheads, but I would wager anyone with anything about them could present that with a little training and practice.

A clump of cyclists riding side by side presents about the same footprint as a motor vehicle going at the same speed, but other drivers wouldn't call that 'an obstruction' and expect it to shrink or pull over or slow down or otherwise evaporate. They'd choose a sensible moment to pull out and overtake, and should do the same with a party of cyclists.

If a motor vehicle on a country road was proceeding at around 15 mph it would soon build up a queue of traffic behind it, and I would expect that the driver would pull over if possible and let the traffic pass.

Also, you never know what a cyclist in a bunch may do.  One may pull away from the others and sideways just as you are overtaking the group, that's what always worried me about overtaking groups of cyclists.

Vine got caught out this morning when scaremongering about covid. A caller bluffed his way passed the researcher to get some home truths out on air about covid and the corrupt BBC. All Vine kept saying was: "You lied to our researcher, you lied to our researcher"!!

Mmmm  I suppose Vine will need to tweet that from 29 Jan the Highway Code does not agree with his 'advice' to cyclists to ride four abreast. They should NEVER ride more than two abreast and they should ALWAYS merge into single file to allow motorists to pass.

It's all the rage now to ride two abreast and quite slowly.I've not seen any group merge into single file.Sadly I think a tiny percentage of car users and cyclists have seen the new Highway Code rules.
