Are there any Tokyo Olympic medallists living locally?

After some recent Olympic Games...I recall that some local Royal Mail pillar boxes were painted gold in honour of Olympic achievements by people associated with the London Borough of Hounslow.Anyone this time?

It would seem not Jim but if statistical gymnastics was an event folk on this forum would scoop gold, silver and bronze!

If there aren't medallists... are there some "also runs" even? What about the local cycling enthusiasts Adrian....did they not even get on the short lists?

Jim Lawes ● 1905d

Jim, Sky News have put together a breakdown of how the medals are distributed across Great Britain and they’re spread far and wide. The leading regions are the North West, Scotland and the West Midlands, but all areas have contributed to our medal haul.Just google Sky News GB medals. I don’t think we have a local representative this time but we still have our gold letter box outside the town council and I always smile when I see it.

Rowing was always the local strength but this Olympics has been such a disaster. With no velodrome or Olympic sized pool in this part of London and limited opportunities for equestrian sport we aren't likely to be a breeding ground for medals in areas of strength for Team GB.

Plenty of other places to do cycle training though. Chasing deliveroo drivers around would be good practice for the Keiren for example.

What a terrific medal count for Team GB.Considering our tiny population compared with China and the USA...I'd say we were tops!Anyone there from the local area. .yes,of course, one of the BBC panelists!

Thank God it's all over, absolutely megaboring, fed up of switching channels to avoid.  Hopefully some real news will now be on our screens.

Claire Moran ● 1904d

There is never much ‘real’ news in August. It’s the silly story season. And it was really quite easy to avoid, unless you exclusively watch BBC1 and BBC2 (or inadvertently press the red button).I found some of the events I watched exciting, rather than mega boring. The women’s triple jump? The men’s 400m hurdles? The relays etc. etc. etc.

345 million pounds of lottery  money went into it was it worth it.?

James Dow ● 1904d

Yes, it was! Given the bloody awful time we've all been through and the pathetic efforts this country has had in the past I have no objection to the National Lottery funding our athletes. These games were what we needed to give us some pride. I'd like to see some fairer distribution of the funds though, instead of the rowers snaffling so much to the detriment of others. But we also have to provide the facilities for people to train and perfect their skills, especially in schools where the new talent will come from. As for the TV coverage - as the IOC did a deal with Discovery the BBC basically had to go with what they could get and it was a bit repetitive at times. But thanks to all our team - they did us proud.

Vanessa Smith ● 1904d

Absolutely. Money well spent.

Stewart Jones ● 1903d

Yes very well spent, much better than spunking it up the wall on a royal yacht.

David Burke ● 1903d

Of course the homeless could benefit from it, maybe next time.

Janice Evans ● 1903d

There are many good causes that could benefit from Lottery funding but realistically do you think this government would do something sensible with it if not funding our Olympians? I'll bet a pound to a penny that Johnson tries to cash in on their success, I hope that like the England football team they don't go to No. 10 to be patronised.

Vanessa Smith ● 1903d

Ha, I'm pleased it did fund the Olympics, but my thoughts are often with those in need,  let's hope Boris would do the right thing.

Janice Evans ● 1903d

"I'll bet a pound to a penny that Johnson tries to cash in on their success, I hope that like the England football team they don't go to No. 10 to be patronised."You mean like Harold Wilson did in 1966 ? He got his comeuppance when they failed in 1970.

Richard Greenhough ● 1903d

You are getting more and more desperate to try and score for your beloved Tories, 1970? Really? When will you start banging on about Whigs, or Gladstone and don't forget Disraeli? Pathetic.

Vanessa Smith ● 1903d

I don't recall Gladstone or Disraeli making political capital out of sporting success - or indeed, anyone before Harold Wilson. He set the precedent for anything that Boris may do to try and share the glow of our Olympians.

Richard Greenhough ● 1903d

I am far too polite to tell you what I think of you - I always thought that wisdom came with age - but there's always an exeption to the rule.

Vanessa Smith ● 1903d

I love you too ;-)

Richard Greenhough ● 1903d

There are 65 Olympic medalists walking tall this week, even the boxer who was very displeased with only coming second to a great Cuban in the final.Spare a thought for Chiswick's Peter Reed, triple Olympian rowing gold medalist at Beiging, London and Rio. He is the proud owner of five golds and three silver medals at various World championships as well. This affable former Lieutenant in the Royal Navy was a regular at his favourite Chiswick eateries before his life changing injury which has confined him to a wheelchair.Next time you pass the golden pillar box outside the town hall spare Peter a thought and wish him well in his slow recovery.
