Great to see another store opening on the High Road (where Gap once was). Seems there's confidence in this old part of town after all. Great pastries too!

We need good old fashioned village bakeries back that make bread/cakes/pastry/tarts/jam donuts etc… based on old fashioned English baking. As a boy in the 70’s I worked in a bakehouse for pocket money and the bread & smell was unbelievable. We need that old fashioned recipe and the ovens that baked such beautiful bread back in the-days you could smell the fresh bread early in the mornings several streets away. A smell we’ve sadly lost touch with.

The Danish have a baking tradition that goes back just as many hundreds of years as the English except the Danish are better at light pastries that accompany coffee.  My grandfather worked for Coombes in the 1950's and my mother told me of how he always smelled of fresh baked bread even on a Sunday morning at mass. There are so many English baked goods and desert recopies that have been diluted for the supermarket trade it is depressing to see what passes for a doughnut or and Eccles cake.  A lovely old fashioned English tea rooms ala Agatha Christie books would be very welcome.

Yes, the supermarket donuts aren't great sadly as you say, commercialisation of mass produce food has helped the demise of quality, tastiness, deliciousness and love an important ingredient of any home cooked grub (love) that’s why home cooked food tastes so much better; because love has been transferred to from the person to the food they’re cooking. And yes too, Danish pastries are delicious made by the experts.

John, We have a traditional family-run bakery right here in Chiswick - Plum Duff, at the top of The Avenue where it meets Southfield Road. Bakes bread, pastries, etc. The E3 bus stops very nearby so it's easy to reach. http://www.plumduff.co.uk

We love Plum Duff! Great sausage rolls, bacon baps, cakes and pastries. They did both our children's birthday cakes for many years.

Another vote for Plum Duff. There is a interesting selection of loaves and reassuringly if you go later in the day there will be very little left showing they only sell what is fresh baked.The bakery business is very hard because you have to employ people to work unsocial hours to monitor the ovens. I would assume the Ole and Steen branch in Chiswick is big enough and will have a high enough turnover to justify baking on the premises but hopefully that isn't reflected in the high prices charged by some other high street chain bakeries.
