Littering the countryside

The BBC ran a piece this morning on the amount of litter dropped by people walking on Snowdon. Can anyone explain the mentality of those who carry food and drink to areas of outstanding natural beauty and then think it acceptable to leave their empty bottles and packaging lying about rather than taking them away with them ? When I went on school trips for walks in the country there would have been hell to pay if we had behaved in that way.

You can come and ask those that drink and eat down at strand on the green by the river and find it too hard to put their litter in the multiple bins provided!

I noticed this morning how many people are leaving old children's toys - bits of wood, even a music stand and various unwanted household detritus around trees on the street or full litter bins. It surely can't be coincidence that this is getting worse at the same time as Hounslow has decided to  charge people to take their household rubbish to the tip. Charging commercial businesses is one thing but householders is another. False economy when they then have to get Hounslow Highways to go round the borough removing fly tips.

A couple of years ago the pubs were using a deposit return system for their glasses.It is a great challenge to undertake to make non-recycle free picnics.  I did this for an opera in the park type thing a couple of years ago.  Sadly people were going around with black sacks to clear up when we had very little and were happy to take it home.If you meet as a group on one of these sort of occasions then it is a great group challenge.

What happened to "Leave only footprints"?When and how did we stop taking responsibility for taking our waste home?  I didn't have a camera the other day but walked past a sort of modern times plastic "fairy ring" in the middle of the grass in the park.  You have to wonder whether anyone  ever told these people that the fairies don't just magic their antisocial mess away or which bit of that they just didn't understand?

"I didn't have a camera the other day" Have you not got a mobile phone? Take away or not,the issue i see around the greens around CHR and Turnham green is the lack of bins and emptying them. Ive said it many times over the years,empty it once a day at 1pm and you have most of the day and evening left for them to be filled up and then blocked. You need them emptied twice a day,once about 9-10am and 5-7pm which would help. I may even start taking pictures of our local bine at lunchtime. Overflowing and blocked wich results in rubbish being put beside the bins. In some places you need two large bins,not one small one

JulianI agree with you especially about Turnham Green, in fine weather as we are currently enjoying the bins are simply not big enough, atm I go out to walk my dogs at 6.30/7am and the bins are beyond full to over flowing. Having said that if the bins are full, surely responsible community minded people should take their food and drinks rubbish home with them ?That's not happening on Turnham Green, therefore there needs to be more signage about personal responsibility for your rubbish as well as warnings of hefty fines for littering.

In LBE there are some signs on bins explaining to people how to flatten their pizza boxes before putting them in the bins.  People just seem to have no sense on volume.  Bins are often full of unflattened boxes.The bins would have to just get bigger and bigger and then there would be even more people dumping everything else including no doubt trying to get mattresses into them too.Bring back Park Keepers!

The people who fly-tip their rubbish outside charity shops after closing time. Those who pop their pizza boxes and wine bottles alongside already-full bins. And the dog owners who conveniently don't see their dogs crapping on Chiswick Back Common every morning. The list goes on and on.

Philippa The problem is that LBH's Enforcement Officers only work from 8am to 5pm and the majority of littering on TG is done after 5pm. How is that dealt with  ?
