Flooding

After today’s heavy rains, several of my neighbours and I have had flooding in our basements, in my case 10” of water. Looking at Twitter, others in Chiswick seem to have been more seriously affected. SWT says tracks have been flooded around Richmond. Photos on Twitter suggest flooding on Bollo Lane is bad. Any other experiences?

The Fire Brigade & Thames Water have declared an emergency in H&F but good old Ealing don’t answer the phone (despite listing it as their 24 hr emergency number) and who knows what Hounslow are doing?  My house is flooded and the filthy black sludge and water everywhere stinks.  Yet again great job Thames Water at keeping our drains working and thanks to our lovely Councils for being right on the case and getting the roads cleared … your responsibility apparently!

I think some staff at Ealing are working from home until 2023/4 due to the rebuilding of Percival House.

Is that meant to be a reason for them shutting up shop at 5pm and having a 24 hours emergency number which isn't answered after 5pm?  Hammersmith & Fulham manage to ship in Thames Water and the Fire Brigade to help sort out all the flooded houses but Ealing just turn their phones off because they are working from home for next 3 years?!

Flooding used to be a regular occurrence when I was a lad ( old git now ).Acton lane under the railway bridge flooded regularly as I guess fishers Lane may have done. Problem with Acton lane was the path alongside the road flooded at same time.Happy days when young, nightmare for everyone else.

There are quite a few shops shut on the east side of Turnham Green Terrace because of basement flooding.

Got away with it thank goodness. At one point I thought the water was going to come over the door but the drains did the job.

I seem to remember them doing a whole replacement number on the drainage under Fisher Lane bridge a couple of years ago. Didnt work did it

There are also houses and shops without electricity since yesterday afternoon - probably east side of TGT affected.  They hope to be back on later this afternoon.One of the main problems can be put down to blocked drains.  The worst (in my experience) is the one at the bottom of the Fishers Lane underpass and the one in the road beside the roundabout coming off Bath Road, TGT and the Avenue.  There are many others too.  Hounslow et al will only gully clear when there is a crisis but in essence they need doing monthly.

The more impermeable drives and hard-standings for cars and patios and buildings and roads causing fast run off into the drains rather than soaking into gardens and the ground the more likely this is to happen.  Making sure that you have some garden instead of all hard landscaping makes a lot of difference as it slows the rainwater on its way to the drains.In London our Victorian and Edwardian homes tend to have sewage and rainwater draining away together so we can have a sudden large volume trying to access the sewage system all at the same time.Every hard landscaper worth their salt knows about SuDs - so don't engage anyone who doesn't know about it!
