The WHO is concerned about the EURO's and the pandemic. 28000 new cases yesterday and 2000 new cases after the Scotland match. Is everyone happy with our matches at Wembley?

On balance yes.The research done after the Cheltenham Festival showed right at the beginning of the pandemic shows that relatively few people were infected at the event itself. People catching the virus were generally those who went to a pub afterwards. Mass attendance outdoor events don't appear to be particularly high risk.Whether spectators are allowed in to see games or not people are going to congregate together to watch the matches so playing games in empty stadia will not do much to prevent the spread of the virus.

Did Professor Dido Harding publish those findings?

I can't give you an exact citation but my recollection from the article I got that information from (probably in the Economist) is that both the local health authority and the Irish health service reached the same conclusion.There is a significant body of medical research that shows that viruses in general and Covid-19 in particular are difficult to catch in ventilated spaces even if they are crowded but do spread quickly in unventilated space. So these conclusions would be in line with generally accepted opinion on these questions.Cheltenham got a reputation as a super spreader event because of Piers Morgan and a badly researched article in the Guardian. When you look at the data, there is very little evidence that it was a major contributor to the spread of the disease.

Indeed, but then you get the other extreme of a minority of people who use covid as an excuse to sit back and put their feet up.Or the farcical situation at the moment where you have people coming into this country from places in Europe which have negligible infection rates currently, they test negative in the 72 hours before they leave that country, come here and then have to self-isolate, pay for tests again on day 2 and 8 and can only come out of self-isolation at the end of day 10.My partner flies back into the UK today from Slovakia, I've worked out that based on the infection rates at the moment, she is 17 times more likely to get covid in the UK than in Slovakia.

The World Health Organisation advice seems to be that large scale events can go ahead but steps must be taken to mitigate the spread of the disease. Whether they would give the green light to next Wednesday's game at Wembley with 60,000 attending at a time when the virus is spreading is another matter.

I was at Cheltenham on 13 March 2020 and it was packed to the brim and four days after, I became ill and was for the next three weeks never had I been so ill. It wad obviously Covid because I had all the symptoms, even though there were no testing available at that time. However, I have since been around many people who officially had it, but I never seem to got ill like that again and now with all the testing freely available and results within minutes using the RFT (rapid flow testing) it’s one way of keeping ahead of it all at least.

To repeatA rise in cases is to be expected as the delta variant finds those who have not been vaccinated, particularly younger people. Indications are that more lockdown will have little impact here as the delta appears to evade such measures more easily than earlier variants.The data points to watch are not cases but hospitalisation and death. If the vaccines are doing their job, and all indications are that they are, and the vast majority of younger people keep experiencing far less severe symptoms, we should not be so concerned with a spike in cases.

There were 2,446 people in hospital for Covid in the UK on Tuesday and the rate is rising every day having doubled in just over a week. As the projections are for the rate of infections to rise for a while yet and the impact of further relaxations unclear, this number will go up, the only question is by how much. What seems to be causing people in the health service concern is the number of critical care staff being required to isolate due to Test and Trace alerts which means the capacity to cope with a big rise in admissions is less than it should be.
