Disposal of old carpet

From what I can see this can’t go to Stirling Road tip. Anyone know where else this could be disposed of please?

Last time I cut up the old carpet into manageable rolls and went to Mortlake where they had a dedicated low level container.  However they are probably still closed following the fire a week or so ago.Your next option is Greenford but it is miles away.

Thank you.  Yes happy to cut it into small rolls.  I'm not sure I'm prepared to go to Greenford.  I'' check with my daughters' their tips are usually much more user friendly.  If necessary Id rather take it with me on a visit.  Thanks for responding Elizabeth

Aren't they all called Household Reuse & Recycling Centres now?https://londonrecycles.co.uk/a-to-z/carpets/    isn't promising but has some options...but there was this in 2015:https://westlondonwaste.gov.uk/recycle-your-carpet-in-west-london/What about Abbey Road in Brent?  Aren't we supposed to be able to use that as it is a WLWA site?  (and didn't Julian Bell also suggest it).  You have to look out for the ID requirements everywhere. I can't read PDFs but there is more info.

Yep but we arent supposed to be driving so they're all a bit far.  Ill try and repurpose it, its only 25 years old lots of life left in it yet.

Always try and repurpose first www.trashnothing.com as well as nextdoor and facebook groups are good as well as on here I guess.I suspect that Stirling Road doesn't have room to separate as much as the other larger HRRCs.  I've always wished they weren't full of recycle banks for stuff that was recyclable kerbside.  I've just binned my bottle of oil poured off tuna etc because I won't be coming to Stirling Road to recycle that to make biofuel.

Maggie Dodge was wondering what to do with some old carpetOld carpet is ideal for weed supression and mulching. So in theory it could be of greatuse on local allotments. Maybe just rolled up and stood at the entrance on the assumption that at least some allotment holders would recognise its usefulness. Maybe with a label attachedjust to be sure "for weed supression and mulching"  michael adams...

Perfect Michael! I know people with allotments.5ThTs exactly what I was hoping for. You’re a star !

Maggie Dodge ● 1945d

Maggie Dodge explained:"I know people with allotments"That advice was from years ago. Apparently nowadays the use of carpets is controversial - a bit like bike lanes. And so you may need to approach more than one.michael adams

Seemingly no carpetbaggers around Chiswick!

I’ve seen a few threadbare arguments of late, none have pulled the rug over my eyes

I've emailed West London Waste to see whether there still are "6 out of the 7" I think it was Reuse and Recycling Centres with skips specifically for carpets. It will be interesting to hear what they have to say.Yes it always used to be used for suppressing weeds but the hatred of plastic is now so great as the facts are that we are all now eating and drinking it as well as from it.

Philippa Bond ● 1945d

Phillipa Bond explained" Yes it always used to be used for suppressing weeds but the hatred of plastic is now so great.."The amount of supposedly toxic substances will presumably depend on the quality of the carpet and the materials used in its manufacture.Hence the scope for controversy. And further went on to explain -"as the facts are that we are all now eating and drinking it as well as from it."While there has indeed been a tailing off in the rise in life expectancy in recent years, this has usually been attributed to austerity measures introduced by successive Conservative Governments.michael adams...

Maggie, you need to go on your bike to the dump with your carpet - that is the only answer, surely you know that :)

Claire Moran ● 1945d

Thanks all and for the jokes, need those today.Yes the stupidity of the situation is Claire, they don't accept you on a bike at Stirling Road and they don't accept carpets. So the suggestion is to drive for miles.  You couldn't make it up.

Maggie Dodge ● 1945d

So many threadbare arguments of late on here and other social media such as Twitter, indeed Russell and none have pulled the rug over our eyes either 😉 We know the real truth, but that unlike theft, lies cannot be locked away from those who seek be untruthful and manipulative. Ah well c'est la vie. I could be completely off base, who knows?

Very deep Loraine !

We are indeed in Kafkaland, Maggie :)

I drop off my garden waste at Stirling Road by bike. It is possible to book a timed slot and select bike as vehicle.

I’m reminded by this thread (npi), rather than more is comfortable, of Henry James’ novella about the pattern in the carpet. As I recall from the post structuralist readings, we never quite know who or what the meaning of the pattern is.You can read it herehttps://www.gutenberg.org/files/645/645-h/645-h.htm

Can we put pieces of children's hobbycraft wood in the green bin.

Janice Evans ● 1941d

Like many troublesome tasks. .deal with one bit at a time...and before long it's all been sorted.Suggest "offending" carpet is cut up in small pieces..and one piece desposed of daily.Freedom Pass travel on trains and buses costs nothing. So each day leave one piece on board when you alight!  Perhaps they'll all finish up at TFL's Lost Property Office! They'll dispose of those remnants quickly. Job done!

Jim Lawes ● 1941d

Do you know any allotment holders? They are always on the lookout for old wool carpets as weed suppressors and the carpet simply biodegrades over a few years.

N V Brooks ● 1941d

Yes we’ve asked around. No takers yet.
