Just an excuse and a cop-out to allow organisations to carry on destroying the planet.  Sorry, Julie, we are not that stupid although you seem to think us in West London are.  You certainly won't be getting the vote frome me and many others I know. When you are licking your wounds, maybe reflect on the fact that you can't force your silly views on people and you actually need to listen to what we want.

Planting trees appears to be worthwhile, I agree. However the reality is very different. Take the trees along the HS2 route. 236762 were planted and out of those 89742 died. Why? They needed water and that is very expensive, infact it is cheaper to let the trees die and replace the dead ones. I have learnt a lot from the Brentford forum about this, and was, well let's say surprised when I had my eyes opened to the politics of tree planting.

Nicholas Beard ● 2011d

Phew, Claire doesn't hold back does she. But I agree with her that planting trees doesn't solve much. If you burn coal that was created from 50 million years worth of trees, then you can't just reabsorb the C02 in a year or two.

Simon Pedley ● 2011d

Some trees absorb it better than others, don't ask which because I really don't know but any trees help.

Janice Evans ● 2011d

People of Chiswick, I’m one little person and trying my best -

Julie Carter ● 2011d

Fair enough Julie you can only do your best. What really gets my goat is so-called 'eco celebrities' jetting around the planet then trying to justify it by announcing to the world how green they are by planting "trees" to compensate.Firstly they aren't trees they are saplings and secondly it go nowhere towards balancing the damage. As for those Extinction Rebellion idiots that though it clever to smash a lot of plate glass windows because they didn't like HSBC, not clever! Think about the amount of energy required to make the stuff and the extra vehicle movements needed to remove and install.Criminal damage is not the way ahead.

Adrian Irving ● 2011d

Agree, Adrian.  So called carbon offsetting does not work and when advocated by governments it is all too often just a smokescreen to pretend it is all fine to continue with their damaging policies such as airport expansion.

Claire Moran ● 2011d

There should be a bigger push to expand solar power. Maybe Extinction Rebellion could direct action to that. Think of all the roofs available, especially large ones on industrial estates which aren’t very beautiful to start with.

Vivienne Cox ● 2011d

Claire - those of us in west London? Born and bred in Chiswick here

Julie Carter ● 2011d

Good call Vivienne. The problem is of course ER don't seem to have enough imagination or brains other than to block roads, trains and smash windows.

Adrian Irving ● 2011d

Well done. Good for you. Keep it up.I didn't mean to sound negative.

Simon Pedley ● 2011d

More people are now questioning where their banks are lending money!

Philippa Bond ● 2010d

So?

Adrian Irving ● 2010d

I was interested to see the carbon plan for Henry Wood , Carmarthenshire where Heathrow has bought offsets from a project to convert sheep-grazing (Unimproved and semi improved grassland with areas of bracken and bramble) into "native broadleaved woodland consisting mainly of birch alder and oak planted at an average of 2500/ha".The location in What3words is "reclining.skid.shack"https://products.markit.com/br-reg/public/master-project.jsp?project_id=103000000005746
