Rubbish

Having a walk down strand on the green and kew green, the rubbish left by people is disgusting.

Luckily the Hounslow Highways team were out before 8 clearing the Strand on the Green side. We need more bins in the area.

Always wonder if would be better to take bins away.

Paul Brown ● 2018d

I think its both. We need a few more bins, or maybe bigger ones, but we all need to take home to recycle. Most people bring their items in a bag, so pack it up and take it home. I saw a filled up bag by the bin and thought at least they sorted it into bottle etc - there are many ways to sort this, we each have to take responsibility

People need to take responsibility for their own rubbish and take it home.  Even with bins with lids, foxes, squirrels, magpies and crows are amazingly clever at removing items.  If you brought the stuff please now take away the remains - it is bound to be lighter.  Don't just put a bag by the bin!I don't think Hounslow Highways' contract took into account all the personal valeting that some people seem to expect. Some of us would rather their contract was used on mending pavements and filling in potholes and other things that the lazy and thoughtless people who dump their rubbish are unlikely to be capable of doing.Sadly bigger bins often attract bigger items. It is a great shame that Govt has put back the introduction of a Deposit Return Scheme for several years.  Scotland's has just been put back for one year because of Covid.  All these cans and bottles have a value.  Aluminium and glass can be recycled endlessly without losing their quality.  Many of us feel less inclined nowadays to pick up other people's rubbish because of the virus.

Have noticed rapid, unwary and time-focused operations of 'bin-men' (and bin-women) needing to progress through their refuse collecting routes without delay leave in their wake escaped littering of refuse that can catch, with papery and easily airborne winged natures of paper card or plastic, to fly up from or fly out of bins and the like when bin-men (or bin-women) with eager work to empty bins are oblivious of what in a flurries flies out of their shoulder carried bins.

Since lockdown I rarely leave home without my trusty litter picker. Aside from the seasonal trash we get on SOTG it’s the repeat offenders that I find most curious; the fortnightly raw-carcasses in a plastic bag left at Harvard Hill, the several per night cigarette boxes left by the exact same tree on Fauconberg road, the bottle of pop perched on the same parking meter (every night). Never been a Strongbow fan but the red currant flavoured stuff seems to have supplanted the funny named polish lager as the tipple of choice. McDonalds still topping Nando’s for the drive-by litterers choice...that delicious looking new place (Cluck Yeah) a close third. Perhaps my first novel will be “memoirs of a litter picker”

On the TALKING PICTURES channel on tv they show old films. One that is often shown is a 1950 short called LITTER REPORT. Litter was a problem then as now. Box Hill is shown after Easter Bank Holiday. The litter left ran into tons. Then there were a lot of glass bottles left which often smashed, which children cut their feet on. So we can see rubbish is not new. Really it's in our culture.

“Really it's in our culture....”Er...  If it wasn't such I lovely morning I'd be tempted to go back to the thread headline and say “rubbish” to that.Culture (in the social habits sense) is NOT set in cement.  I can evolve.  It can be challenged.  It can be changed..

Alison, have you ever thought perhaps the fly tippers may not have homes to take it back to... just a thought.I am a litter picker on behalf of the local Residents Association. This litter picking I make a daily task because it's always there every day. Motorists open their car windows and throw it out, I've seen them doing it. Not always the case mind you; picnickers just leave their remains where they were sitting; charming people. Litter everywhere not just SOTG be assured. We need voluntary pickers on every street, lane, road and park in the Borough. Do not depend on the Council to clean it up, that is not the way. Educate all to clear their own mess  I say !

Agree, when there is litter that is all you see and gives bad impression of the area.

Nicholas I drove along the Colnbrook Bypass this morning and didn't see any fly tipping. I have good eyesight too.
