It always amuses me to read how the locals interpret things American. If I may...Freedom of speech includes expressing oneself as you wish using the flag however it may suit. In 1989, there was an artist in Chicago who displayed the flag on the floor encouraging people to walk on it. No surprise it caused an uproar. The artist was a defendant in the Supreme Court case that ensued which ultimately ruled federal laws banning flag desecration were unconstitutional. And while there are various protocols for displaying the flag they inform etiquette not required practice. As for lowering the flag before dusk, if you light the flag then it can stay up 24 hours a day. Again, a guideline.I remember having a out-and-out screaming argument with my father about this. As a young gay guy coming into his own my life was often played out in public politics saying what was and wasn't legal, appropriate, reverential, etc. It was tiresome. So when this exhibit made national news I defended it saying how the flag wasn't my flag if it couldn't be bothered to protect the likes of me. As I saw it, the discussion was precisely what the installation meant to provoke. I imagine those who fly the Confederate flag have a similar mindset bar the bit about wanting to exclude versus include.  But you can burn it. Walk on it. Piss on it. Shred it. Do anything you want to express your view. And yes, you can cover your boobs and bits with it. I take issue with those who still think cat calls are appropriate on a public forum. Then again, maybe Simon has a hot ass and I'm missing out. Who can say.

Amidst all the politicking brouhaha about the union flag, it should be remembered that it was Gordon Brown, in his very first speech in parliament as Prime Minister in 2007, who decreed that the union flag should be flown all day, every day on public buildings. The following is an extract from a newspaper article at the time:"In the ancient history of 2007 Gordon Brown stood up in parliament to give his first speech as prime minister. His theme was “reinvigorating Britishness”, and he offered a series of policies to promote the idea.Prominent among them was the plan to end the 1924 edict that allowed the union jack only to be flown from public buildings on 18 designated days a year, including the Queen’s birthday and Remembrance Day. Instead, Brown announced, all public buildings were to be encouraged to fly the red, white and blue at all times, including schools, hospitals, prisons and police stations.“The union flag is one of the most recognisable symbols of the UK,” Brown’s proposals argued, “but while in other countries, such as France and the United States, the national flag is regarded as a source of pride, in recent years the union flag has all too often become the preserve of political extremists, a symbol of discord rather than harmony. It is critical that this symbol is not hijacked by those who seek to work against values of tolerance and respect.”The following day, as flags were hoisted over all government ministries, one unnamed Labour MP was widely quoted in the papers as saying: “I can see the array of flags from my window looking over Whitehall. It is an arresting sight and makes me proud to be British.”Brown toured the TV studios to argue that the flag symbolised British values of “liberty, a sense of responsibility, fairness”. He also proposed that all school children in England, Scotland and Wales should be required to pledge an oath of allegiance to Great Britain and her flag, in special ceremonies."

Hounslow is a local council and not a government building it can therefore fly any flag it likes legally and within reason. There are very few flags in the world I have any respect for.  Often they are imposed by depots and merely a sign of their imperialism. Oh and Ireland is not part of the UK it has it's own flag which the Irish fought for.  The South African flag is also a symbol of struggle and a just fight won.  The Union flag however is not representative of any of any peoples struggle but the oppressor's might being first flown by James VI in 1601 when he got the thrown of England and Ireland to go with his own Scottish lands.  The Welsh have never had representation on any UK flag. The union flag was debased in the 1970's to the 2000s by the right wings use of it to represent their nationalism and has only been rehabilitated of late.  The Red Flag is the only flag flown in multiple countries at the same time. The history of flags is one of blood and war and some are truly incredible.  One of these is the US flag known as the Stars and Stripes.  The US national anthem The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Keys after the flag was flown in the battle of Baltimore in the war of independence and its lyrics are truly inspiring when you read about how it came about. New Zealand recently had a referendum on the national flag and I believe was the first time a whole country voted for the symbol of their unity. The things the Union flag is supposed to represent are not valid now and it's history in the world is very bad and one of death and destruction.  I think a referendum would be a good start in building unity because after all we are no longer an imperial power or any of the things the UK was when first it was flown
