If the NHS from its inception had received a steady income from the public paying directly into an insurance scheme - that scheme would have been self financing and monies hopefully would steadly have accumulated. Profits from all the invested monies would have been e ploughed back into the NHS, not paid out to shareholders. Unfortunately, it was a good idea but rushed into being without sufficient solid regular financial backing. Back in the day, health was sticking plasters, the odd antibiotic injection or course of pills, splints and plaster casts. Relatively inexpensive aids but look at the enormous inventions now available, many many vastly expensive procedures involving extraordnary imaging and scans. Medical and health care has to be paid for by regular contributions from every single member of the public from birth to death. You insure your car, your bike, your home against all manner of accident, theft, act of nature, so it is with your health and welbeing.
