Brexit happened a year ago and, happily, Alan Clark is still posting. I say happily because we need some posters who can manage more than a single sentence and we need posters who can elaborate on an idea.All opinions should be welcome and, ideally, all opinionated people should be able to back up their point of view.I’d say Alan meets that criteria and I suspect that’s why he’s on the receiving end of your comments.

My recollection is that he said that if a deal was done(we had already left the EU),that he would cease posting on the forum,which is the equivalent of throwing a tantrum or spitting his dummy out.I seem to recall a post where he actually said goodbye after a fashion.I wondered how long it would take for his return.I couldn't care either way.

I voted to leave the EU Robert,but refuse to entertain any hate or king of the castle stuff.As for provoking him,I doubt that he takes any comment by a leaver that seriously.If he does, perhaps he should get over it.He isn't having his arm twisted to log on of even have a look at what is being said. Imo he had no intention of staying off here as he only stopped posting for a couple of weeks.There are several posters who I don't bother reading anymore,and am sure some don't read mine.It doesn't matter...

Keith, you have indeed been a model of discretion. I don't see in you any of that triumphalism exhibited by some other leavers. However, there are quite a few posters on here who will take every opportunity to berate the EU, whilst refusing to entertain any criticism of the catastrophic performance of the PM. It's pure hypocrisy to castigate (albeit with ample justification) the Commission for threatening to invoke Article 16, whilst remaining silent about the government's proposal to override the Withdrawal Agreement. It's compounded by calling the Commission's reaction undemocratic, whilst staying mum about Johnson's prorogation of Parliament- what could be more undemocratic than that? The same people who complain most vociferously about the Commission and take pleasure in the UK's superior performance as regards vaccine sourcing and distribution also refuse to pin any blame on Johnson for the many errors, of both omission and commission, he has made in handling the Covid crisis.

Spot on, Kerry.  Posters like Alan, who are obviously well-informed and able to back up their opinions with coherent arguments are rare and valuable.  Vindictive threads like this are sadly all too common.

In simple language, it was absolutely wrong when the EU said they would evoke article 16 on Friday and it was absolutely wrong when Boris Johnson  said two weeks ago that he wouldn’t hesitate to trigger the same article.I’m thrilled to bits with where we are with vaccine procurement in the UK, we could have achieved the same as members of the EU but it’s fair to argue we might not have done so if we were still members.None of this is especially relevant to the harm that our economy will suffer outside of the single market.It’s also true that there’s no reason to create a petty thread against a particular poster, albeit he’s especially dramatic or passionate in his views,

I broadly agree with that Robert, and thank you.If people decide to play political tennis with an issue like this, they need to be prepared for the ball to come back with pace and sometimes spin on it.Politicians(whoever they are) make mistakes and sometimes get things right,probably in about equal measure imo. I resent having to hand over power to ours, never mind anyone else's.

Janice, do you know the footballing expression, play the ball, not the man? On this forum it means argue your point but don’t be mean. We mostly all fall short but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. We don’t need to start threads specifically to be spiteful, not that you have, and we need to be prepared to argue a point and back it up, or to listen to other points of view.

Kerry as I said we really have nothing to argue about, they have their views and we have ours they have trouble accepting that fact and think we should not have our own opinion is where the arguing starts and for me it ends.

This is neither a vindictive or ad hominem attack. Mr Clark said he would shut up about Brexit if a deal was struck, and then sat on his thumbs for quite a while. It was only when the EU dropped a clanger that he popped up again to spout off as of old, to somewhat muted merriment and good natured jesting comments.

One further thought.  In view of the catalogue of broken promises over Brexit perpetrated by Johnson and his government, broken promises that I must assume the OP is at ease with, it does seem inconsistent to say the least, to start a thread about a forum remainer who has started posting again after saying he wouldn’t.

I genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about.  If you’d care to make your point in plain English, I might answer it.But to reiterate mine.  It is arguable that AC broke a promise.  I get it.  But it’s a trivial one.  The Brexit campaign made numerous promises - ‘easiest deal ever’, ‘no downsides, only upsides’, no hard border in Ireland and numerous others that you must be aware of.  These are serious, not in any way trivial.  Your targeting is misplaced and unfair in my opinion.
