Can anyone recommend a carpet cleaner/shampooer that removes stains effectively, many thanks, ps vacuum cleaner type, not the solution.

I have used a Vax carpet cleaner, though I expect they all work in more or less the same way - applying a detergent solution and then removing it together with the dirt. It's horrifying how grubby the water is! I would say that this is quite good for generally freshening up a carpet, but may not work so well on specific stains. These really need to be spot treated with a specialised carpet cleaner before using the machine - how successful the overall result is will very much depend on what the stain is and how long it has been there. I had mixed results on this score - some marks came out while others just won't shift.
