Household bleach applied regularly would cause serious irritation. I'm sure the comment was made in jest, but it would damage your skin. Many of the sanitisers created recently used a WHO approved formula which is both safe for regular use and has been shown to be effective at clearing COVID from hands - if used appropriately.***The level of alcohol needs to be over 60% to be effective against COVID. Some naturally gravitate towards higher levels of alcohol - what is sometimes called "medical grade" sanitisers - on the assumption that more alcohol would be more effective. However, there is a role for the water in the formula - it is believed to help penetrate the cells of the virus and make the sanitiser more effective. At levels over 80%, some research I've seen suggest that sanitizers become less effective against COVID.(There is a role for higher alcohol sanitisers - for instance to protect against Norovirus which does require a higher concentration.) Certainly, the higher the percentage of alcohol, the more irritating and drying the product can be, to the point where people might use less of it or do so less frequently. *** A lot of people don't use sanitiser properly - it is often just a quick rub of the hands. You need to apply enough to fully cover both hands and then work it into your hands and finger tips for around 20 seconds.
