too much to throw away

I guess, in common with many people after Christmas, I have a huge amount of stuff to throw away - more than recycling boxes and the wheelie bin can cope with.  Is it in order to fill a black sack with the surplus and put it on top of the wheelie bin for collection?

No. the binmen have been told to leave any bins with bags on top

Our binmen have just been along, working very quickly and certainly taking extra bags.

All of the paper and card recycling boxes in my street were left unemptied this morning. I'm not surprised - I noticed yesterday how much stuff people had put out and wondered how the binmen would cope. Now we know. Maybe they'll come back as no general or garden waste is being collected this week, but I'm not betting on it.I have never dared put out extra bags; at least the recycling centres have remained open under this lockdown unlike the first time.

I think you may have been just unlucky Bruce, my recycling bins have all been emptied just this minute.  Don't forget, it's a day late this week.

Update. They just came with the refuse truck that normally picks up the general waste from the wheelie-bins, but to take the paper and card. There was obviously a plan all along!(This is Hounslow Council by the way - don't know about Ealing.)

Last week I had an extra bag of plastic waste put out on top of the plastic/tin etc recycling box. It was collected no prob. As was the same on another occasion earlier in the year.It helped by being in what was the original plastic recycling bags I still have. Just saying.

All our recycling boxes were emptied as usual at 6.45 this morning.The crew were already looking weary so I knocked on the window and gave them a wave. They smiled and waved back before moving on.Boxes all returned and stacked.

I guess they carried on as normal until the paper and cardboard section of the truck was full - obviously there was much more than usual because of Christmas. Occasionally something goes wrong with Hounslow's collections but I find something like a missed collection is always addressed if you take the trouble to flag it up. As to the original question posed about having excess general waste, I think if you ask the crew nicely they will probably take it, particularly if you have been generous at Christmas!

It is never a good idea to put recycling in a black sack - it is always better to use a see-through bag if you can. Isn’t this what the Christmas Box is about.  A bit extra in their pocket for a bit extra rubbish or recycling? Seems fair to me.
