Staveley Road Barrier

I assume there have been lots of posts about this already, But a scenario just occurred which I think needs to be spoken about. We had a recycling truck driving North up Park road, from the station towards Staveley. With cars parked on either side, the truck takes up the entirety of the road. So we have cars turning off Staveley and having to completely stop as there is an impassable truck slowly coming the other direction. These cars were stuck as it is now illegal to right hand turn into Lawford Road and cars now behind them blocking them from turning around and back down Staveley. Resulting in angry drivers needlessly horning their horns to no effect and blocking residents leaving their homes. I would like to point out an attempt to ease traffic on Staveley is causing Gridlock on Park Road, a far narrower road, less suited to higher volume of traffic. Also if this barrier is also trying to ease omissions, I'd like to point out these cars had to then reverse and go back the way they came. Raising all their distances travelled, raising omissions. This Barrier is failing and causing worse issues than no barrier was causing. Some thought is needed in how to make it work.

I live on a quiet, narrow street just off Chiswick High Road. Our recycling day is Wednesday and you can guarantee that some asshole will sound their horn as they are frustrated at being held up for a few seconds by the recycling truck.

There's a temporary fix to make a bit better.Send the recycling truck into southern part of Park road via Staveley Road.It will still have to stop to pick up the recycling from the houses, if fact it will become a moving road block, similar to the motorway police.But when it eventually collects its convey of vehicles behind the truck, as they are moving in the same direction, there will be no having to reverse back in Staveley Road and less sounding of vehicle horns.Unless some other vehicle enters Park Road from Sutton Court Road and stuffs it all up, and has reverse into a busier and the main road out of Grove Park.

"held up for a few seconds by the recycling truck"A bit inaccurate, Carl. To be caught behind recycling on Cranbrook takes about 10-15 minutes. It is a tight, one-way street and often cars, delivery vans and larger lorries get stuck idling waiting for the crew.As I sit there often and watch, it occurs to me recycling collection is about as inefficient as it could possibly be: one man emptying out bins one after another one by one by one. Okay two men with one on either side of the street. Still. Is this the best we can do?It also occurs to me if there were an advance team using a larger commercially sized bin, they could walk down the pavement collecting in advance and then leave the bin at the end of the street be it on Chiswick Lane or CHR (using Cranbrook as the example) to be collected by the lorry. Since there are multiple streets akin to Cranbrook this would save time (read money) and save vehicles from idling behind a woefully slow collection protocol so it would help with pollution. Not to mention the recycling lorry idling itself. Invariably collection occurs during working hours and often during rush hour. So if people posit deliveries should occur outside the hours of business operation (though how a business gets a delivery outside of business hours remains a mystery) then surely this service could as well.

David, re your last paragraph, I live at the end of a cul de sac. The recycling guys used the large 1ton builders bags to do just what you describe. It worked great and took much less time to get clear of the road.Guess what, management at LBH stopped them from using such a sensible idea and now they have to do individual houses one at a time, taking much longer to clear the road. Say no more.

I cycled past - large cars parked either side of the road, large cars blocking the actual road - the recycling lorry had pulled in as much as they could.From my perspective (yes I cycle, drive and walk) the barrier has significantly cut down traffic in the area - cycling north from grove park to Chiswick (I am one less piece of road traffic now). Feels safe - used to run the gamut of fairly high speed builders vans.The aim is to lower emissions by reducing the total number of passenger miles done in a car - worked for me :)James

Large Cars "block" the road. Really? How amazing. They belong to the people who live in road. The parked cars have not magically appeared. Residents pay Hounslow Council for parking permits in order to park there.That is why it was a mind boggling stupid idea to divert traffic off a wide road with traffic islands and crossings on to a much narrower road with parking on both sides reducing the width of the road to one lane. On Hartington Road and Thames Road and on the school streets Houmslow Council are  introducing traffic measures controlled by ANPR cameras. Why does Park Road / Staveley Road have to a 24/7 physical barrier and not an ANPR based system? Is it written in the ten commandments or imposed by statute? No of course not it is just the whim of a traffic engineer.

There is another safety twist to it: The visibility to the right in the right turn from the south end of Park Road into Burlington lane is very limited which makes it dangerous. And the new barrier directs traffic into this dangerous turn.

Didn't someone post a report the other week that there have already been some accidents as a result of the cars being diverted off Staveley into Park Road due to the sight line issues that you mention.

Yes - fully agree, that right turn opposite the station is very tricky.
