17th December Covid-19 infection rate

35,383 new cases reported, I think that's the highest rate ever ?Yet our Government is still going to allow  5 day Christmas get together ? Perhaps I'm  missing something but isn't that utter lunacy  ?

532 reported UK CV deaths verses 23 in Sweden.Cathcart..??!!!

I believe that 11,000 were added because the Welsh Government missed them in previous figures

I'm on the fence with this one. I normally work on Christmas Day at the Battersea Park party for local (to Battersea) OAPs. One of the first tasks of the day is to pick them up from their homes. A huge proportion will share the very sad news that you are the only person they've seen in the previous week.I wonder what sort of Christmas they'll have this year. Likewise, my mum is 95. Still fit and able, she's stayed in (alone) since March. While her body is OK, her mental health isn't - thanks to lockdown. Should she be denied a window of enjoyment?I only wish personal accountability was a bigger thing in this country. The mental health scars will remain with us long after it's cause - the pandemic - has gone.

GordonHow incredibly kind and generous of you to give up your Christmas Day for the benefit of others in these troubled and worrying times 👏Clearly there are justifiable exceptions, such as what you are doing.PS.Re the infection rate figure I quoted, I'd forgotten about the Welsh numbers being added, so thanks for the correction.

Infections or Cases? There is a difference.https://data.spectator.co.uk/

Russell Pearson ● 2140d

Russell I should have put 'cases'

People who intend to travel and mingle with other households over Christmas are being asked to self-isolate from today in preparation.

MB > "532 reported UK CV deaths verses 23 in Sweden."You are comparing the number of deaths by date of report for the UK, with the number of deaths by date of death for Sweden. The true comparison (by date of report: 17/12/2020) is UK 532, Sweden 91.The population of Sweden is about one seventh that of the UK.

John Whitworth ● 2140d

The figures I quoted are what Worldometer show for yesterday. I am aware that UK has more people. Who do you think has done the best job, to date, out of UK and Sweden, taking into account death rates, economy, businesses, jobs, civil liberties, social lives, mental health and people's futures?

Michael Brown ● 2140d

MB > "Who do you think has done the best job..."Such a comparison is extremely difficult because of the huge number of contributing factors. It does not help if, as seen here, a partial comparison is attempted without understanding of the source data.

John Whitworth ● 2140d

"35,383 new cases reported, I think that's the highest rate ever ?"Highest reported; yes, but that doesn't mean more people have it than in say March/April.

The government are clueless. 94% of the deaths are in the over 60s age group and they represent less than 25% of the population. The tiering system should be age based.Tier 1 - under 60s Tier 2 - 60s to 80sTier 3 - over 80s (60% of the deaths so far)Care homes are where the majority of deaths have taken place. If you're in tier 1, life should be conducted almost normally but still wear masks.Tier 2 avoid mingling with Tier 1 and avoid busy times in shops.Tier 3 completely lockdown as though your life depends on it. Which it does.

LP: "Yet our Government is still going to allow  5 day Christmas get together ? Perhaps I'm  missing something but isn't that utter lunacy?"I personally agree that large numbers of people from different households should not be getting together, even if they are family and it is Christmas. But in this particular instance, I actually have some sympathy for the government. For if they ban mixing altogether, some people will still ignore it and there is no practical way it can be prevented or enforced. In the end, the key is that they are permitting mixing, not making it mandatory. And if people are so selfish/stupid/irresponsible as to ignore the welfare of their own family and friends, then ultimately that must be down to them, not the government.

... for exposing the latest of Brown's "fake stats".Does anyone know whether he lacks the intelligence to understand this stuff? Or is it merely that he lacks the integrity to admit when he's wrong?

Richard Cathcart ● 2140d

"Such a comparison is extremely difficult".So you express no opinion; JW, and I know why - Sweden wins hands down.

Michael Brown ● 2140d

This morning, Worldometer showed 532 CV deaths for UK and 23 for Sweden under 'Yesterday'; but, Cathcart, you may be right for once, in that the info was fake because the site has since been updated, and the figures for UK and Sweden for yesterday are now shown as 532 and 2 respectively!

Michael Brown ● 2140d

MB > "... the info was fake..."No, it's just that you don't understand how it is processed.Did you happen to notice what the 'Total Deaths' figure was for Sweden before the latest update? You can find the answer in the other thread...

John Whitworth ● 2140d

I'm reading off the site page like for like.
