WELL DONE 2 local firms in W4

I cannot recommend both these businesses highly enough.   They are both in Devonshire Rd.   W4 BATHROOMS were unfailingly polite and really helpful suggesting various style and have provided me with an excellent and well priced shower unit and tray, all done by talking to them over the phone.  The goods were ordered and held until my installer was here and ready to take delivery.   Their service was exemplary. The other Devonshire Rd business who has given me wonderful advice and service is CHISWICK LIGHTING.   I speak on the phone to their extremely knowlegable and helpful staff, order and pay, once I was able to drive and stop outside, they put the goods in my car and I managed to get back to Grove Park.   This last time with SCT closed, not so easy but my daughter managed to collect but CHR and entire area jammed solid so actual delivery to me finally made today.I applaud these local businesses making such superb efforts to carry on trading under the current appalling conditions inflicted on them by Covid but even worse, Hounslow Council's manic disruptions to our roads throughout W4!

I have recently 'discovered' the lighting shop on Devonshire Road now it's had it's makeover and it really is a lovely shop (no connection) very contemporary with  lights lamps etc.  A perfect small business.

Chiswick Lighting is wonderful.  They always seem to have exactly what you want.  I haven’t been back since their refurbishment but I wish them well in this increasingly difficult retail environment.

How are the shops & businesses round the corner in the section opposite M&S by the big pub.  Are you still able to park outside those businesses like the old bookshop etc?

Jennifer Selig ● 2145d

Yes.

To be completely accurate not to mention transparent, Lucy meant to say "yes but not on Sunday" as the parking is taken over completely by the Flower Market, eventually by the Antique Market and possibly the third and fourth Sunday of each month by the Cheese and Provisions Market whose application is pending.I know Lucy knows this. And I know she (and others) will lay into me for providing facts. Which tells you the truth isn't important, only an agenda.

Devonshire Road has two new shops open for Christmas. Simon Carter is a great addition to Chiswick - some amazing shirts  and his shops are always full of interesting things.. It shows confidence in W4 which is good news these days.

When did the car park outside the George IV become known as the Market Place?  The address for the pub is Chiswick High Road?

I raised this in another thread. The first time I saw it referred to as "Old Market Place" was ahead of the arrival of the flower market. My suspicion was that it was a bit of marketing chicanery to imply that this was where Chiswickians would gather in days of yore. Google maps does give it that name, but I have to say, having lived here for well over 40 years I had never heard it before.

BH > "My suspicion was that it was a bit of marketing chicanery to imply that this was where Chiswickians would gather in days of yore."There does seem to be some history to back it up..."The Flower Market will stand on the site of Chiswick’s original outdoor market, which was established in early 1920, in response to a different economic need - men returning home from fighting in the First World War who needed an income. The discussions at the time in the equivalent of today’s social media - letters to The Chiswick Times - are very revealing of the class and gender politics involved."Read more: https://chiswickcalendar.co.uk/chiswick-market-centenary/

I assumed it was a way of not identifying it as a car park as I’m sure plenty of people miss the parking spaces.  Is it usual to take away parking for such events. I’m thinking unused areas such as school playgrounds at weekends would be better.

Very interesting. I wonder when anyone living last referred to the Old Market Place and got anything but a puzzled response? I wonder what was there before the 1920s iteration or was there just a very wide pavement. It would be great to see some more old photographs.

Also how long did the indoor market survive in Linden Hall? Was it there until the police station was built? I don't know when  that was though I'm guessing from its style 1969s or 70s. Of course that building's days are now numbered too.
