UK citizens with EU residence permits bring proof with you
I spotted, in the FT, that from January 1 UK citizens travelling to the EU will be in the same boat as US citizens, i.e. unless your visit is 'essential' or you are resident in the EU, you will be denied entry. I asked a friend in France who has 500 or so UK clients, resident in France, and helps them deal with the French state, whether this was true and he confirmed that it was. He was concerned that some of his clients had not brought proof of French residence with them and were intending to return in the New Year. So if you have a relative or friend coming from the EU to visit over the Xmas season, remind them that passport control on the EU side may need proof of residence on their return.
