Christmas Cake

Are there any local bakers of home made Christmas cakes that anyone can recommend? Thanks in advance.

You’re so right,  Jennifer. And I have to admit that I don’t really like Christmas cake so won’t get much return for the time and effort Also based on my baking attempt this afternoon I should leave it to people who know what they are doing. Disastrous soft amaretti - they were a danger to fillings.  Straight in the bin although they looked good. Tips, anyone?

Thanks Katja. Thanks so much for the offer. I would much prefer a stollen but I’m under strict instructions that it has to be the fruit cake, marzipan and icing with the same plastic Santa,  reindeer and snowman probably bought in Woolworths in 1963.

..but no response from local traders, such as 'Yes, I do Xmas cakes!', which I guess is what was wanted.  Meanwhile the evil conglomerates in Chiswick do have Xmas cakes.

My hunch with Stewart's request was confirmed when he explained what he was after.When British folks ask us about Christmas cakes they want what Stewart described. This is not something we do nor do we feel it in our best interest to wade into the territory. To us its a bit like asking the Chinese restaurant to whip up a lasagna. I'm sure they can, but is that what would tick the box?I would suggest trying Nikki's.

Well, Stewart, the answer seems to be that the local bakers responding on here won’t make a Christmas cake for you, though you could try Plum Duff, who make cakes to order. 62 Southfield Road. Mackens in TGT may sell them too, but I haven’t checked. But you can buy one in a supermarket or make it yourself.  It’s great making your own, the heady scent of raisins etc soaking in brandy overnight...

Have every sympathy Stewart - I hate any cake with dried fruit in it, but for years made several Christmas Cakes for my husband and younger son and various relatives. What I do now as Christmas cake is so heavy and hangs around for so long, is boiled fruit cakes - six this year, plenty of booze in it - freezes brilliantly and according to the experts moist as anything and better than a CC, also easypeasy and quick to make. Plus several Dundees. Recipe for the boiled cake if you want it, I think it's idiot proof......

Glad you found a baker Stewart.Couldn’t sleep last night. Instead of counting sheep I decided to count Christmas Cakes.Came up with 15 types.Have I missed any?Traditional Christmas Cake with EVERYTHING in it and on itVegetarianVeganNut freeGluten FreeWheat FreeGrain FreeFat freeEgg FreeSugar FreeAlcohol FreeOrganicSulphites FreeWoke: Free Range/Conflict Free/Sustainable/ Responsibly Sourced/Cruelty Free/Child Friendly/no plastic/edible decorations and wrapping etc.No reference  to Christmas in case it offends someone so just Holiday Cake or Fruit CakeP.S. Agree about boiled fruit cake. I use brandied fruits, boil and let sit overnight.Lots of Chinese 5 spice and for extra moistness add a small tin of crushed pineapple.

Marlene, my wife often makes boiled fruit cakes (yummy), but never the way you do. I'll have to have a word. I'd have to think of a different alcohol to soak the boiled fruit in though as I can't go near brandy it doesn't agree with me.I always make our Christmas cake though, around October/November and for the past 3 years have fed them every 2 weeks with 12 year old single malt whisky. Never had a dry one but what a waste of a good drink.
