Bourne Place - new sign aaaaaggghhh

If anyone turns into Bourne Place from Dukes Avenue and needs to turn right into Duke Road - you can't ! And there's no prior warnings about Road changes on Dukes Avenue or at the beginning of Bourne Place !A new sign has popped up since yesterday saying left hand turn only from Bourne Place, therefore to get to the the middle and end of Duke Road, I guess the route will now be Dukes Avenue to A4, up to the roundabout then left and Fraser Street etc.Which total plonkers decided this ? It's making access to the Glebe Estate almost impossible, not to mention increasing pollution - sheer stupidity and madness

Haven't seen the sign but I am not surprised.  I think the LBH plan is to force all traffic away from residential streets other than main thoroughfares such as SCR and Chiswick Lane.  My guess is that we will shortly see the revival of the proposals to block the Duke's Avenue exit onto A4.LBH really has no interest in residents of areas cut off by these proposals as far as it is concerned you should all be walking or cycling even when you are disabled and cannot

The sign is on the corner of Duke Road and Bourne Place. I think it was intended to inform northbound drivers on Duke Road that only a left turn is allowed when they reach Chiswick High Road, and this is confirmed by a turn-left arrow on the carriageway at the CHR junction. (The ban on right turns into CHR from Duke Road was always part of the cycleway design, both the full scheme and the 'temporary' one being implemented now.)Unfortunately the people who erected the sign (possibly TfL's cycleway contractor) have left it facing Bourne Place instead of Duke Road.  I reported this to Hounslow's traffic team yesterday evening and asked them to turn the sign.

Hi RichardMany thanks but when will you know exactly what the position is on that sign ?

Loraine Pemberton ● 2155d

If I may, the signage has shut down access to the Glebe estate. The sign on Devonshire Road says "access only" though it doesn't stipulate but many would argue it clearly means you cannot turn right on to Glebe Street (does it?). And now if you can't turn right onto Duke Road then effectively you can't get home. Or to school. Idiots might be an understatement.

David Lesniak ● 2155d

David - as Richard has pointed out, the sign saying no right turn is facing the wrong direction and should indicate that you cannot turn right from Duke Road onto the High Road. You are correct that "except for access" in Devonshire Road means that you cannot turn right onto Glebe Street into the Glebe Estate. "Access" is for Capital Motors and loading/unloading for the shops.

Richard, this is not the first time something like this has happened at this junction. A couple of years ago the No Entry signs faced the wrong way, ie facing into Bourne Place and showing No Entry into Dukes Rd. It took several calls to HH and 3 weeks for them to turn them round the right way.I hope this change doesn't take so long.

Shall all us residents of 'Glebe Island' just ignore it!! Let's just try and get Devonshire Road open again ey

Rob Manners ● 2155d

By all means ignore the errant sign. Even if you got a PCN, it would be cancelled because there won't be a Traffic Management Order that supports its current position, and it's the wrong sign anyway for that location on Bourne Place.

Richard Jennings ● 2155d

Agreed! Glebe Island it is! Banning the turn-off (though there's no clear signage) from Devonshire Rd into Glebe St makes no sense at all & only hits residents. But then the whole LTN fiasco is devoid of sense & is driven by a handful of fanatics.

Unfortunately, Gail, the sign does not specify the conditions you mention. Only a few who have followed these threads might know that. The other issue is access is allowed for some residents but not others. Those who live on Prince of Wales have access, but those who live off Glebe do not. At present access means access. Period. Any other intention requires signage clearly indicating that. It's a bit like saying you can't turn right when on a no left turn sign is posted.

David Lesniak ● 2155d

"Unfortunately, Gail, the sign does not specify the conditions you mention"You are completely right David. The Glebe Estate Residents' Association is trying to get clarification of the signage, but it is difficult to see how this could be done. There cannot be a "No right turn" or "No Entry" sign at the entrance to Glebe Street because, for example, if you have collected your car from Capital Motors, rather that entered Devonshire Road directly, you ARE allowed to turn into Glebe Street. The whole scheme is complete madness!!

Gail Busza ● 2155d

Have I collected a fine by mistake?  last week I collected something from a Devonshire Rd shop, to get back to Grove Park, I turned right on Glebe Street, at the end turned right up to the Hi Rd and then left on the HighRd, to Sutton Cr Rd, over the A4 into Grove Park.  In other words I drove into and out of Glebe "Island".

Jennifer Selig ● 2155d

Is there a clear map of where and what direction we can go in Chiswick? Thanks

Basil Finnis ● 2155d

Jennifer - you shouldn’t have got a fine as you accessed premises in Devonshire Road to collect something. It also would make no difference (in terms of a PCN being correctly issued) whether you carried straight on, turned right into Glebe Street or turned left just past the junction with Glebe Street (sorry can’t remember the name of that short road).

"trying to get clarification of the signage, but it is difficult to see how this could be done"With respect, Gail, all's they gots to do is make a new sign. Rather simple, really.

David Lesniak ● 2154d

"all's they gots to do is make a new sign"Except the sign would have to say:No entry except if stopping in Devonshire Road for loading/unloading or access to Prince of Wales Terrace. No access to Glebe Street or no through road unless stopping in Devonshire Road to access these two situations.

Gail Busza ● 2154d

Gail I think you might've forgotten this bit:Except on alternate Tuesdays in months that end in "Y" in even years only. For further clarification before you turn, please pull over to the side of the road and have a scroll through our local online forum. If still in doubt, start and thread asking for route guidance then sit back and wait.

David Lesniak ● 2154d

Ha ha ha :-) very good

Gail Busza ● 2154d

'Walked' down Duke Road earlier and everyone's ignoring the left turn only. Well done everyone on Glebe Island lets give LBH some welly!

Rob Manners ● 2154d

Apparently it's an error........doh! Is there no end to their incompetence??

Mandy Waters ● 2152d

That's Hounslow for you, what more can we expect? We're more West Central London than West West London that LBH cater for. If only Chiswick came under Hammersmith & Fulham
