Winter sports insurance

In renewing our house, contents plus annual travel policy we have discovered that they have removed winter sports cover for anyone aged 65 and over, a reduction of some 10 years on the current policy.  As I don’t ski but do walk eg  taking a cable car up and walking along the edge of the piste to a restaurant and back, this too is not covered.Are there any other enthusiasts who have a policy that is less discriminatory?This is not likely to be needed this year but I like to have less restrictive options.

Might be worth checking with Hiscox, they tend to do more 'bespoke' policies.

After 20+ years with Hiscox we cancelled last year when they were asking more than £3,000 for house contents and a standard annual travel policy.  We moved to CSIS at half the cost but without the travel element.  Last year our separate annual policy covered us worldwide and we were not able to travel  as all our planned trips were cancelled.  No claims made.Also consider that Hiscox will be making huge payments for their policies to businesses who had to close because of COVID and will need to recoup those funds.  Whilst it is unlikely that we will be skiing next Jan/Feb. we would like to have the option to do so.

It wasn’t the COVID.  The insurance cover the people took out was for business interruption and COVID was not excluded as it was unknown at the time nor did the legal wording cover the possibility of this happening.  Class action coming to Court sometime soon.

Hiscox and other insurers are currently embroiled in a big class action suit over business interruption claims. I am also thinking of looking around for home insurance as Hiscox are now very expensive.As to travel insurance - check out Staysure. We switched to them a couple of years back as increasing age and having one or two health issues had made things more complicated - with premiums to match. They seem to be very flexible - particularly over Covid cover and are recommended by Moneysaving expert. We've never claimed fortunately so can't judge what they're like should push come to shove!

Two policies worth considering are those of the Ski Club of Great Britain (https://www.skiclub.co.uk/ski-club-travel-insurance) and MPI (https://mpibrokers.com/travel-insurance/wintersports-insurance).  These are both specialist wintersports insurance so may be overkill for your needs (and therefore probably not cheap).  The Ski Club one definitely covers up to 75.  I'm 99% sure that MPI does as well - but you would need to check.  MPI will cover you if you are travelling against FCDO advice - BUT NOT for the cause of that advice.  So if FCDO advises against travel because of COVID, you would be covered for everything but COVID.  The Ski Club one will not cover you at all if you travel against FCDO advice.  The usual caveats apply - I have no connection with either insurer (although I am a member of the Ski Club) and you should check that the policy meets your specific needs.
