Chiswick Pre&Post Lockdown

Hi everyone! I am currently conducting some research on the demographic in Chiswick pre and post Lockdown. I believe the people of Chiswick may be able to assist me on the following: - How many men residing in Chiswick (or professionals in general) work in the City or in Central London? - How many of you have been working from home since Lockdown? - Do any of you expect to go back to the office? If so, when and how many days per week? - How many of you have local work spaces outside of the home? - How many of you are actually itching to escape their work from home environment? VS How many of you have grown accustomed to it and would like to continue along those lines? Let’s have a discussion. Let me know your thoughts. I’d appreciate your help.

Jessica - John’s wife here - while I would support any survey you are doing - I find your focus on men insulting. There are loads of women that work in the city that live in Chiswick as well. Perhaps you might edit to explain you focus on 1 gender?

Indeed Loraine.  Jessica, thank you for your post. As for the the 2 ignorami who replied, words fail me. Your particular research refers to, and involves men. I'm quite sure and hope that the good people of Chiswick may well be able to assist you, but you will find the odd (very) one or two Dorises on this Forum who wish to bleat on about a load of nonsense, and for some obscure reason, best known to themselves, find it 'insulting'. Complete rubbish. Your survey is only interested in men, precisely because your survey is only interested in men - quite simple. "There are so many women who work in the city?" So what? Quite clearly, your survey isn't about women who work in the city. Perhaps you might do one in the future? Don't take the slightest bit of notice of these 2 stupid people.

OK Jessica.I work in West LondonI've been working at home since MarchI won't be going back to the office until April at the earliest, then only for a couple of days a weekI don't have, nor would I want, a workspace outside of homeI'm OK with working from home but do miss my colleagues, Zoom and Webex is not the sameMy company (Global) has indicated that mix of home and office based working will be the norm

Yes, I bit my tongue and stayed away but I'm obviously not the only one with the same questions. Could this be considered a sexist and elitist survey which is why it wasn't answered immediately?  Maybe it is accidental but if not perhaps it would have been a good idea to explain why you are only interested in the views of professional men in 2020?

An aside.I am worried about the long term effect on relationships with people that have to work from home. I can foresee it is going to put strain on couples as we all need our own space and to mix with other folk face to face.I wouldn't be surprised if divorce rates rise particularly if money is tight.Back to the topic.

I can’t help with your survey as I am a female. Good luck though. Was shocked by some of the responses. Demographic surveys are based on sampling and sometimes it is necessary to be specific who you are targeting based on gender, ethnicity etc.  I am sure there is a perfectly valid reason for the specific nature of the request.

Exactly why it's weird to just target one sex.  Most of us have strong relationships with the other sex (or ok, sexes if that is your view).  You can't have an independent research study that only studies one sex for this topic. Maybe they are trying to sell a product to men, seems to me the most likely reason. The OP has not stated her reason for this survey.  I get called or emailed multiple times a day for survey responses.  I always reply that it takes my time, they are going to get a lot of money for delivering the results, so can we agree a fee?

Rubbish!  Nah...  Who says?  Who knows?Suppose she was conducting a survey for Women's Own magazine.  Or Women's Weekly.  Or any one of many titles specifically targetting a female audience?  Should she interview men at the same time – just to make sure she doesn't offend anyone?I can imagine a variety of perfectly proper and professional reasons why any survey might be targetted towards one or other of the sexes but not both.Like many things in life, it all depends on the target audience.  Other creatives might tell you exactly the same – before I ever pick up a pen I need to know or find out exactly who or what is my target audience.  It's kinda basic and critical.In this case I wouldn't have a clue what's going on.  The OP might be an experienced pro or a student.  Whatever the case, it shouldn't matter.  I'd automatically and initially give the benefit of any doubt.  And sure,  jumping headlong at the girl with presumptions insinuations of sexism may feasibly expose (big deal) a somewhat badly thought-through plan.…....Or equally might expose a thoroughly unnecessary, badly aimed and completely inappropriate response by quite a few on here..I suspect the latter..

The OP may have deliberately wished to survey men, but equally they may have approached this with some biases. I’m sure she didn’t want to offend anyone. Could I suggest she:- Discloses who she is and what the research is for. - put the survey questions into Formstack or Survey Monkey. - include basic demographic questions including gender, age and location.  - get a friend / colleague / this forum to give feedback on the questions to ensure she hasn’t assumed something that might be better tested. If the OP isn’t a professional researcher - perhaps new to the role or at uni / school - no harm in saying so as this is a friendly place and we’d be happy to help.

Why do people have to get on their uppity horse all the time when gender is in question? If the original poster is doing medical research about male balding or something then surely that is for men only questions to ask surely! The original poster should have made more clear what her research focus is and with what organisation/college/university she is doing it with.

Please forgive me. I didn’t mean to offend anyone. My research is focused on men or professionals in general. Professionals in general, meaning both males and females. Who are professionals and work in the city.

Hi Claire, Sorry if I offended you. I am more than happy to hear from women on this topic. As I replied to Philippa, my research is targeted at anyone and everyone who are professionals. If we are to be specific, both males and females are welcome to respond. Wording only stated men and professionals in general. So this may have caused some confusion. I am happy to hear from you if you’d still like to respond.

Hi Ed, Thank you for your response, it is very helpful. My intention was not to offend anyone, or approach this with some biases. I had first got into contact with the Editor at Chiswick W4 with my questions. They kindly told me that the forum would be able to assist me. I am Jessica and I am conducting this research for my new role as a Business development assistant at Rathbone Boxing Club. I am not a professional researcher, I am a Law graduate and thought I could use my initiative for my new employer. I thought the best thing would be to talk to the people of Chiswick directly. I couldn’t do this in person due to Lockdown, so platforms like this are very helpful. Once again I am sorry if I offended anyone. I hope the people of Chiswick would still be happy to help me. To the people that have responded so far, thank you very much. To be more clear on my basic demographic questions, I am happy to hear from: - Both Males & Females - All ages- Location: The people of Chiswick, who work in the City or in Central London - Professionals Hopefully this is better worded and specific. Please do let me know if I have missed anything out. This should have been mentioned before but I wanted to conduct this research as I believe things have now changed. As some of you mentioned, I agree there are so many female professionals working in the city who live in Chiswick! Which is why I wanted to hear from the people of Chiswick. I hope this is better worded.

Hi JessicaI’ve never worked in the City but have always worked in Chelsea, Fulham and Chiswick. I would have hated to be working on my own at home recently. I would have missed the buzz of an office environment and the company of my colleagues. My careers were always very public focused. I guess it depends on how sociable you are.

Hi Stuart, Thanks for your response. Yes, I agree with you in regards to the target audience. However, I did not mean to just target males. I wanted to hear from professional females also. I did not mean to offend anyone or to be sexist in any kind of way. You are right, I probably didn’t think this through as well as I could have. This is new to me, so I’ll be sure to take into consideration some of the responses for the future. However, I do not think I will use local forums again until I am more familiar with it. You are still somewhat being vague: what is the objective if your research or study? A psychology or sports science degree for example.Which professional body are you authorised to conduct such personal questions for i:e college; university; professional research organisation etc?
