POWER CUT EVERYONE!

SSE ENERGY. Power cut tonight from about midnight, spoke to them on the phone, apparently a third party has cut a cable which covers the vast part of South West England stretching from Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Guildford and West London, Heathrow. I’ve been told it will be back on at 2am approx. Food in the fridge will hold for a few hours so not too worriedJust lit a candle........... how romantic.

PLEASE CHECK ANY NEIGHBOURS YOU KNOW WHO USE OXYGEN OR OTHER ELECTRICAL MEDICAL MACHINES THAT THEY ARE OK AND SAFE. Jimmy Kim  Thank you so much for this warning.  I am trying to verify this with SSE but cannot get through on the phone.I use an electrically powered convertor to provide my oxygen so your message was essential reading for me.  It was just chance I saw your message - no one has phoned me.  Air Liquide who provide the electric converter has told me to switch over to using the emergency reserve liquid oxygen cylinder which should last me through to tomorrow morning.  They will come out and replace the cylinder.  Hopefully the electric power should be back on by then.  Please check any neighnours you have who use oxygen that they are OK and safe.

I can't find any reference to this on SSE's website. There is an ongoing fault affecting the UB6 postcode area but nothing else remotely near.

BEWARE - Liquid Oxygen stored in cylinders are HIGHLY FLAMMABLE - lighted candles or matches must not go near this liquid oxygen supply - it will cause a big explosion & fire!  TAKE GREAT CARE.Electric oxygen converters will enit a loud screech if their supply is cut off,  No fun at all to be scrambling around in pitch dark with just a torch to disconnect and reconnect breathing tube to emergency liquid oxygen cylinder.  DO NOT USE A NAKED CANDLE OR MARCH FLAME!

If you are vulnerable and using medical equipment it may be a good idea to get yourself on to the registers with your service providers.https://www.ssen.co.uk/StakeholderEngagement/VulnerabilityStrategy/Jennifer  I hope you find out what happened.

If you need to.

yes bruce im onto that right now - sse distribution centre are checking - they say this looks like complete nonsense - lady gone to check with her manager.  Right THIS IS A SCAM IT IS COMPLETE AND UTTER RUBBISH - POSSIBLY TO ALARM AND FRIGHTEN VULNERABLE PEOPLE.  IGNORE IT - DO NOT TAKE PHONE CALLS FROM ANY NUMBER YOU DO NOT RECOGNISE, DO NOT ANSWER ANY KNOCKS ON THE DOOR.  Apologies for my panic too and the OP should be banned from  here!

Thank goodness! Philippa is right though Jennifer, if you’ve not registered as vunerable with your supplier you should. As I recall when I switched to my current energy company I was given the option to do so. If you’ve been with the same supplier for years they might not have updated their records.

I suspect that Jennifer may be and that is why she said that no-one has phoned her...The trouble nowadays is that just a light bulb going can throw the whole house into darkness until you find out from the circuit board which circuit has the problem - and you've got to get there in the dark to find out.

Phew, me catfish were getting worried.

"SSE ENERGY. ... spoke to them on the phone"Jimmy, please explain how you came to be informed of this apparently non-existent power cut.  Did "they" phone you unexpectedly?  Or did you phone SSE, and why?

Shortly after the original message appeared I looked on the SSE website map and there was indeed a flag in Acton Lane and a list of affected W4 5xx postcodes, though not 'vast areas of South West England'! The web page suggested the problem would be solved by about 1:45am after which I guess it gets removed from the site.

Thanks Peter.....

Did worry for people that have essential electrical equipment though, I assume these houses have backup generators? Came back on around 1:30am and everyone’s house alarms then started ringing on a reset! Stay safe, stay happy all :)

Jimmy Kim ● 2167d

Don't let this thread put you off giving further warnings Jimmy.

Janice Evans ● 2167d

Jimmy Kim - Thankfully my panic was totally un-necesary but as I do not have a backup generator, was understandable.  However, I do apologise - your original posting was obviously kindly meant but the planned power cut was NOT for the whole of the SW but just a small postcode area W4 5...
