forum goes bonkers

Day 1 of the second national lockdown and Chiswick forum's already gone stark staring mad..The air thick with the growling of humanity stamping it's feet in furore.  Petitions flying in all directions. Tables getting thumped.  Seething screams of frustration echoing down corridors of posh prison cells as inmates gnash their false teeth growling the word Curran whilst heaping abuse and swearing profanities in the general direction of Hounslow.Every birdbrained forum busybody suddenly out in force and foaming at the mouth.   Every single one of our regular bossyboot brigade frothing corruption and injustice at those with the insufferable cheek to even dream about a land with fewer cars.   The blobheads and the bucketbrained battleaxes, all fuming from their nostrils and screaming out loud in wildly exaggerated unison.Couldn't get home last night!  Took me hours it did!  What if granny has another of her turns?  What if there's a terrorist attack on TGT?   What if La Trompette lets our table go?  The blame-gamers firing-off their star-spangled idiot wisdom on this - the one day of the year when all utter madness gets blown high in the sky - courtesy of Guy Fawkes.  “This is exactly what happens to a city when the cycle lanes go in.... I told you this would happen!” .. yeah yeah yeah.. got any more pearls of nincompoop wisdom?Where the hell have all the staff gone? The quiet forces of genteel balance and common sense?   Where are you all?  The semi-sane ones?  The less noisy minority.  The ones with a talent to amuse?   The optimists of this world?  The originally daft?   The ones you wouldn't at all mind having to dinner?   (belated thanks to Richard Greenhough for at least having a go at our resident pillock yesterday)..But really..  and whatever...This place and the whole of Chiswick will end up getting exactly and ONLY what it deserves....... and now for something completely different...   Rolf Harris never lived in Chiswick....

Adrian asks what or whose side am I on....?In all honesty I don't know the answer to that.  So let me freewheel and see where I land.I'm dead against all forum busybody buggers and their bossyboot bitch counterparts who have recently been throwing a non-stop torrent of personal abuse at the pro-cycle lobby.I'm massively against the OneChiswick poster campaign.  I think it's a cheap and nasty trick to demonise Hounslow.  As I also think it's a cheapskate ploy for posters to demand anyone with an unconvinced POV on W4 retail to go speak to the big man who runs a dry cleaning business in Devonshire Road.Basically because I can see how some businesses have been unluckily hit by Covid issues.  Whereas I also suspect Mackens and the equally glorious Covent Garden fishmongers opposite have been doing a booming trade in the current circumstances - yet both are displaying that poster. Most likely an example of retailers wanting to remain within the same, vaguely mainstream opinion, as their customers.  To me it's a far more complex issue than that poster proclaims.I'm violently pro and in support of all disadvantaged, elderly or disabled folk who need to drive from here to there locally in order to independently conduct their simple everyday business.Yet I'm violently against that gigantically far larger lobby of our W4 community who demand those exact same privileges despite being completely able-bodied.    May their patio cocktails rot their gums.I'd love to see car ownership and particularly freewheel local driving dramatically reduced.  I'm actively pro all radical and urgent policies that promote the saving of our climate.I'm pro bicycle and any active policy that encourages rapid growth of the bike as a means of getting about in and around town.  Even though I don't personally ride a bike.Does that help... for starters?

Thanks for that. Most points seem pretty fair and reasonable (although I’d argue only reasonable if tackled in the mid to long term with more thoughtful and considerate changes). However, it appears the hypothesis behind these changes is that an introduction of massive pain to drivers will pressure people into giving up cars for journeys that are close enough to walk or cycle, and that taking up a significant space dedicated to cycling will improve it as an option for such journeys. This hypothesis makes a lot of assumptions about how people actually use their cars (I.e. overwhelmingly for short distances) and that the cycle space improvements are actually integrated in a way to fulfill the promise of making it more appealing for the replacement of said journeys.I have not seen any data on the first assumption. In my own experience of car use, I could not reasonably trade walking and cycling for my journeys given both time, distance and load. I only visit the high road by walking, but I need to navigate through W4 for longer journeys. Of course, many people are not very close to the high road and need a car, bus or tube to get in. It appears via anecdotal evidence and the scale of uproar, this is likely true for most of our traffic in the area. In any case, we should understand this before making massive changes as it’s key to the hypothesis. On the second assumption, I won’t repeat all the criticisms of how bidirectional lanes on one side of the road are not advisable as they are all over this forum.I’m afraid rushing these specific changes into Chiswick will not accomplish your goals given these poor assumptions. Why not take the time for proper consultation and revert back to the original cycle lane proposal (which I oppose, but it at least had some deliberation)?
