To me Sean Connery was the ultimate and best James Bond ever, no other Bond actor could match him.He was a a man of distinction, charm and humour.

I loved him and Michael Caine in "Born to be King" - true old fashioned Boy's Own adventure, filmed in a far off kingdom in the mountains beyond India.    Escapism at its best - hope they show it again on the telly.

The original and best Bond.I think you're thinking of 'The Man Who would be King', that ripping yarn by Kipling,Jennifer.It has to be one of the best films of its type and the two of them were born to play those roles.

Sean Connery was the best James Bond because he was believable as an agent with a licence to kill and you knew he would do it in a heartbeat.(IMHO)

Thanks of course is was a Kipling story - I must have seen it well over 5 times but a long time ago now so about time ut weas reschown on the TV in an appreciation series of his films.  Trying to remember the Penelope one but can't - who else was in it?  I'll check on Gogle - actually trying to watch Rugby have Strictly recording now and got DNA to follow.Yes he was the very best Bond - did like Craig though.

When I lived in Edinburgh in the ‘60s  Sean Connery could often be seen atop a St Cuthbert’s horse and cart, delivering milk.  That was his job.  You never saw a cooler milkman, a wry smile on his face as he gently took the reins...Actually that was just in the imagination of my brother and I.  Connery was already a star, having moved on from being an Edinburgh milkman some years earlier, but those milk floats were an everyday sight and it was so easy to picture him there.  Still is.

It's a shame about the disdain of the English.Having just spent a convivial evening with Irishman who've moved hereand on listening to them and reading CLR James,Derek Walcott and German writers,there is much affection for us mongrel English.The Scottish and Irish have been as brutal to each other as the English have been to them and to themselves.I blame the Normans.

Just spoke to my dad, who mentioned that back in the 60s he was working on his car (in Acton) and a group of teenage girls asked him if he knew where Sean Connery lived. My dad being my dad had no idea who Sean Connery was, and asked them whether he was a footballer. Never heard this story before from my dad, it was the obituary on TV yesterday that prompted him, but true enough, Sean Connery did live in Acton, in Centre Road near Acton Park, until he got fed up with fans turning up at his house and moved out in 1967.

In the interest of accuracy and for the benefit of potential pilgrims, Connery’s former Acton home was in Centre Avenue, not Centre Road.Perhaps Rima or some other enthusiastic person could pop over to the W3 forum and start a ‘notable former residents’ thread?  Liven the place up a bit?

Great!I will suggest it to Torin.As it happens I was also about to suggest Billy Connolly and Pamela Stephenson who wrote plays, books and biographies.Apparently lived in “that house a bit like a castle, the corner of Chatsworth and Cavendish Roads” when in London.

Highlander is the most egregious example. SC playing an immortal Spanish-Egyptian with a Scottish accent & Christopher Lambert playing a 16th C Scotsman with a nearly impenetrable French accent. Still great fun though.

How do you know that some regions of the USSR don't have an accent similar to Scots when speaking English ? Anyway, unless you are going to have the entire dialogue between the crew of the "Red October" in Russian with sub-titles, the accents are a case of artistic licence.
