Help with iPad.

My friend has no wi-fi at home and uses her iPad on sim while out and about, it is stuck on a screen saying connect to wi-fi which she is unable to do, how can she open the iPad is there a way around this.  Have tried Apple problem pages, nothing there that deals with this problem.

Hold down the vol down button and then the power button holding both at same time and it will do a soft reset but does not wipe anything

What Russell said. That should unfreeze it. Longer term if she only uses the iPad while on SIM she might be better off turning off wifi as the device will first try to connect that way to any wifi signal it finds. With no wifi I'm wondering if she ever updates her iPad? These are big downloads to do over a 3G or 4G connection.

I hate updates and they seem to do them now without warning, so long as the iPad is charging.

If it hasn't got  a wifi connection I think the iPad will probably request permission to install using the cellular network. Obviously it is up to the user to agree to this or not depending on the reliability of the connection and of course how much data they have available on their contract. You can set the device not to automatically download updates (though I find mine does it anyway!)  - then it's up to the user to install the download. I'm not a fan of updating for the sake of it, but eventually so many things will be outdated or compromised that there will really be no choice but to bite the  bullet. Probably the best thing is to connect using wi-fi -maybe at a friend's house - then do the update.

On the iPad press 'Settings' then find 'WiFi' then move the green WiFi slider off.  This will stop the iPad trying to log onto WiFi services when you're out and about, when you just want to stick with the cellular service.
