Knife sharpening

Sadly Top Hat Drycleaners no longer offer a knife sharpening service , anyone know anywhere else that does it ?

I think the Japanese knife shop in the high road do it.

A friend of mine had some knives sharpened by Wyndhams on the High Rd. However I don't know if this was just because he is such a good customer! Worth asking though. We haven't tried the Japanese knife shop yet but I think we will.  We have a set of Global knives which I sharpen myself - the technique is different from that for normal knives - and if done wrongly can ruin them - all to do with angles.

The Borough Kitchen shop sharpens knives as does the wonderful Japan Knife Company over the road.I bought a knife from the JKC just before lockdown and it is a joy to use.  The shop has much more than knives, so worth a look.  Maybe a good place to look for a present for your foody friend.

Japanese knife shop definitely says they do it, though we haven't taken ours in yet to try.

A lady knocked on our door and offered knife sharpening.We felt sorry for her, and, against my better judgement, gave her some knives and scissors to sharpen.It was a disaster.The scissors never worked again.The knives weren't sharpened properly. We spent ages fixing them using a whetstone.I thought I was too smart to fall for scammers, but clearly not. Lesson learned.

Was that  few weeks ago? I had a similar visit but declined the offer. I'll trust my whetstone and have one to take into the Japanese Knife Company to be sharpened.

I've seen a pair of women who go door to door offering sharpening. I don't know if they  have a vehicle parked somewhere but I thought they looked a bit doubtful. Until comparatively recently an old chap would turn up about once a year on his bicycle shouting out "knives to grind". He could prop the bike in a stand and then pedal to power his grinding wheel. I'm not sure though what damage he would have done to a set of Globals!

I've used Top hat in the past and they did a nice job on global knives. I must admit though, that i've used a knife sharpener tool, which I'm sure will horrify some. But it seems to work. It may effect their longevity, but as they're not used 24/7 it seems a better solution to always have them sharp.
