Yes, I watched this.  It was deeply shocking but not surprising.  London - the international capital of money laundering.  These matters ought to be in the headlines of all the daily papers and there should be a storm in parliament and demands for the criminals to be brought to justice.  Of course this won’t happen partly because the corruption goes to the very heart of government and to the owners of the mainstream media.  Also, I suppose because we live in such dangerous and disrupted times people’s attention is focused on more immediate dangers.

Rima, the  best we can hope for from our present government is waffle, lies and evasion because, as the programme made clear, the Tory party is a beneficiary of Russian money.It would be great if we could get petitions, crowds and demonstrations on the scale we had, for example, against the invasion of Iraq and Brexit, but I don’t see this happening any time soon, sadly.

What at first seemed to be an audacious and unrealistic strategy to take control of the market economy turned into something almost unstoppable, destructive, cruel and completely bereft of feeling or scruple.What is so shocking is that the corruption and immorality did not start as commonly assumed in the 1980's with the ascent of Reagan and Thatcher to power but with the beginning of the global economy in the late 1950s. Perhaps it has been a planned and conscious effort. Or perhaps it has simply unfolded through many years of unthinking opportunism by many individuals intent on making a quick buck with no regard to the consequences. Either way it fully explains the subdued response to Brexit by the London financial sector. All these banks are quietly absorbing the costs and risks of shifting a significant part of their operations to Paris, Frankfurt or Dublin. They have an effective lobbying power. Why has this not been more visibly mobilized? Is there another reason that they are actually not really that unhappy to be seeing London freed from EU constraints?
