Have they opened Turnham Green Terrace to cars?

At about 4pm there were tons of cars coming down from the Avenue, though few the other way.  There were far too many to have just missed the signs.

Its been like this all day. I live on Chiswick High road, above the Cafe Nero on the corner of Turnham Green Terrace. There's a traffic jam and its been that way all day long. I thought it was out of bounds for cars!!!

These road closures are nothing short of ill conceived and thought out lunacy by both TfL and LB Hounslow. Myself and my neighbours, both residential and commercial, have recently found out that the one way street of vehicle access our properties will now be closed due to CW9. The reality of this means whilst we can access this single track Road to our properties, we now will have no 'legal' egress as we will have to reverse the wrong way down a one way street !?!?Perhaps the great and the good at LB Hounslow and TfL could explain their logic to this extraordinary decision ?

I've just walked up TGT. Bumper-to-bumper, and an incredible number of 4X4 type vehicles spewing out fumes as they transport a child or two from A-B. One such vehicle stopped on the crossing, blocking it.

Well the Avenue is costantly seeing more traffic than before at peak times and more and more cars starting to enter the Avenue from side roads. Not a traffic jam or bumper to bumper but an increase than before covid lockdown. Ive said it once allready,those living off woodstock road will eventually see rat runs gradually appear from bath road. When it gets bad people start to look and try alternative routes

Western end of Chiswick was gridlocked this evening. Work already started on the pointless bus gate, with 4-way lighs at the High Road Acton Lane junction. The bus gate will leave the western end of the High Road and feeder roads as congested as the Goldhawk Rd/ King St end. It may be that the really bad delays on Acton Lane and South Parade due to the roadworks are forcing people down TGT. This is what happens when you have one legal route and then roadworks or accidents make it unusable Madness. More traffic, more queues, more fumes, more delays, more pain for all. Do TFL and Hounslow not talk of greener streets. Oh the irony

Everyone should contest the fines, if it's true that it costs the council more to deal with contested fines than they make from them.

And if their appeals are rejected, they pay twice as much as they would have done ... up to them I suppose. Who blinks first? Remember, the council only have to create one evidence pack showing the signage is adequate (plus the video of the offence for the vehicle in question) and they can re-use that evidence pack every single time.

If you drive westbound along CHR, the no right turn sign on the left is unlit and barely visible. Others posters comment that the junction itself is marked with no left turn signs, which would give the driver no reason to think there is no right turn allowed. Its a mess, and not fit for purpose. Although if anyone can say what the purpose is I would love to hear

I agree with you, I personally think the signage coming from the Hammersmith direction along CHR is inadequate.There's a bit of me that hopes that Rahman makes an appeal that ends up getting to an adjudicator, and then someone 'independent' can determine whether or not the signage is adequate.

Surely it says no left turn because to turn left would be to drive the wrong way down Annandale Rd. It doesn’t say no right turn because access is allowed for various reasons. Would you like all the reasons listed on the traffic lights?

Thanks James for that helpful post. I am merely pointing out how confusing and hard to spot the current signs are. But the 4 no left turn signs and a near invisible sign warning that TGT is access only is IMO very likely to catch the unwary. One might also think that is part of the plan

Hi James,You're right but equally the presence of a no left turn sign and the absence of a no right turn sign (plus the markings on the road) and the visibility of the sign on the corner of CHR/TGT mean that many drivers might miss the restriction.I'm sure that some drivers are still deliberately flouting the signs, but there still seem to be far more drivers going along TGT on a daily basis than I would have expected if the signage was crystal clear.Let's face it, when I see a restriction and can see that there's some sort of camera enforcement I make really, really sure there's no likelihood of me contravening any regulations, and that's what adds to my feeling that the signage isn't quite good enough.

Hi Andrew,It will be interesting to see if traffic decreases now that fines are being issued. We know for sure that people have been choosing to ignores the rules, that’s their choice. I agree that there’s more traffic using it than I’d expect and when compared to my impression of traffic now using Fishers Lane underpass there’s a big difference.Now that they’ve fixed Google and Waze hopefully that will also mean those drivers that don’t even look at signs and just blindly trust a sat nav will also stop driving down TGT.

The fix gets unfixed when drivers go through the restriction. GPS recalibrates and the algorithms open up the route again in Waze etc. It’s like lemmings enabled by technology.

Human nature being what it is I also think that if you see a lot of other cars driving down the road, you assume it's ok to do so.I really wish that the council could have had someone just handing out fliers to drivers for a week telling them that in the future they'd be fined if they used TGT.BTW I've said this before, I don't personally think the complete closure of TGT to through traffic is a good thing, but if it is closed, it helps no one if some drivers continue to ignore the closure and then all get fined.
