In normal times, you can be sharing a bus with around 60 other people. At every stop a few get on and off, so any lengthy journey will probably involve sharing air with 100 or more people. On your return journey, there will probably be another 100 or so, and they will mostly be a different 100. A train carriage will have even more people than a bus.The traffic on a hospital ward is likely to be a lot less - and it will be a lot the same people repeatedly. Many will be the same visitors every day. You won't be exposed to nearly as many bugs. For nurses, the number they are exposed to in hospital is probably difficult to change. If they reduce the exposure to hundreds of people on the journey to and from work, it has to help though.I know I get a lot less cold/flu type illnesses since I stopped using public transport, and started cycling to work.
